Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Urget: Need help with project

I hate to post this here but I have tried getting in contact with a few of the IADN folk for some help with an application I am building but have had no luck getting any responses or those who do respond are not at a place where they can help. I am willing to pay if there is a seasoned Alpha5 developer on the web app side that has some time. Even if someone had time this morning that would be awesome. If you are interested please send me a PM and I will provide more info.

    Thanks!

I believe I responded with an offer and hourly rate. At least one other IADN member said they could help over this weekend or early next week, what happened with those offers?

I was referring to the 5-hr block. I've checked around, most of the top developers are going to request a minimum block of time, some ask for prepaid. I moved in that direction in January because this forum pretty much takes care of any request of a smaller nature. I'd rather give my time away up here than go through the work to send an invoice for 30 minutes. Personal attention to a problem by a qualified developer is going to come at a premium. For comparison, Alpha charges $200/hour for premium, quick return support, $495 minimum. I recently paid that amount because it allowed someone more qualified than me to solve my problem in a couple hours and, in this case, set me up with the proper approach for many projects to come.

Ain't it the truth. There's a lot of people who are "willing to pay" until it comes time to pay. Usually it's nickel & dime stuff and they figure it out anyway.

As Joe Pesci playing Nicky Santoro in Casino said: "always the dollars..."

It wasn't a poke at you, which is why I put the note there. I used the thread to make a point, though.

I think people need to remember that they are not paying for the the 10 minutes it takes you to answer the question but for the 1000 hours you invested getting to the point where you can answer the question.

Often times low cost software leads people to think that quality technical support/consulting will also be low cost. Sort of like if someone sold me a NASCAR race car for $1000. I might then assume I could hire Jeff Gordan to drive it for me for $7.25/hr. But if I bought the same car for $2 million I would expect the driver to cost some big bucks also.

Re: Urget: Need help with project

Actually yes, I "lost" some business when I went to a prepaid 5-hour minimum. But I will suggest this for any consultant. Prepaid means I am obligated to respond, its a mini support contract. I firmed up my commitment to the concept when a non-client to whom I was providing free advice expressed frustration that I did not call back for four days to solve his problem. I realized I was being to informal.

There's this forum (and others like the IADN forum) where I give time away, and I give or trade time with my close peers, and then there is prepaid support. And the previous statement notwithstanding, I pretty much answer any question emailed to me -- up to a point.

Another reason the prepaid block works is I have a nice 3-ring binder with a tab for Support and each prepaid account name as a separate page. I have their contact information, server and app specs right there along with a history of support issues. For those guys, I know right away what's up when they call, and I expect their call. It just works better.

It's really hard to respond to others emergencies, to make them my emergencies in the middle of other activity. Making support more formal has helped me at least.

If you guys feel like there is a point that needs to be made here, please create a different post. I am going to ask that this post be deleted. This isn't the place (the forums) to try and solicit paid assistance and I apologize for that. Have a happy Sunday guys.
