Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Refreshing linked grids

How do you refresh a linked grid when the linking field changes?

For instance, I have a field called "SalespersonID" in one of my tables. That field is used to link a grid with the sales person information (name, phone, etc.)

If I change the ID, then submit, the name in the linked grid still shows the old name. I have to manually refresh the page or close and then re-open.

How do I get these to sync better?

Haven't tried it, but what about using the field's javascript OnChange event for {grid.Object}.refreshLinkedContent() ?

      That's supposed to happen automatically.

        Re: Refreshing linked grids

I have seen it happen automatically before, and was suprized that it is not this time.

Also, the refreshgrid isn't working all of the time either.

With the refresh grid javascript in place, it refreshes if I manually change the value, but if I grab the value from a lookup grid, it doesn't cause the row to update. It's like it doesn't recognize the change if the new value is grabbed from a lookup.

Furthermore, it only updates grids that are linked at the grid level. I also have a grid linked to the row. (I inserted it into the field list.) That internal grid seems to require a refresh no matter what.

I could provide pictures, or demonstrate in a go to meeting if you want to see it.

It's also possible that I am simply doing something completely wrong!

          Re: Refreshing linked grids

Embedded grids (a grid as a field in another grid) are in general a bad idea, and if you make them refresh all the time your site will slow to a crawl. Use a grid in a row expander instead.

This may fix the other problems. If not, ask again.

            Re: Refreshing linked grids

FYI: just to be sure, I downloaded the latest patch. I was a couple minor revisions behind, but it still doesn't work right with the most update to date version.

I also found another problem which I will recap in a new thread.

I removed the embedded linked grid and it made no difference.

Just to be sure, I saved and exited, then came back to make sure there was no lingering code.

The linked grid is not refreshing itself.

Just to be sure we are on the same page:

The grid is linked to a field in the grid portion. The freeform is to the right of the grid. It is linked by only 1 field.

The linking field has a lookup, but can also be manually entered. When I manually enter the data, and have the refresh javascript, it works correctly. But even with the refresh script in the onchange event, the value does not refresh if I grab it from the lookup.

                Re: Refreshing linked grids

I have attached two images. The first image shows the original, unchanged data. The arrow points to the linking field and the linked data. (The TC ID is 2 and the name is Darlene Armstead.)

In the second picture, I have changed the TC ID to 3, but the name still shows Darlene. Notice also that I have moved the cursor to another field to show that the cursor is no longer in the changed field.

                Any other suggestions?
