Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    DropDownBox order

How do I set the DD--box to order the records by "item_no"?

This is one of the reasons I use the e.rtc object to set my own dropdown lists with OnGridInitialize.

Hhhmmm...do you know if will that work with a "cascading" dropdown?

Actually, to answer my own question, I think it would.

        Re: DropDownBox order

So, can e.rtc be used in the OnGridExecute event? I want to use a dropdown box for my users to select from a parent table that the field is linked to. Then I want the users to be able to update the parent table 'on the fly', which they can do via a button to pop open that parent table grid. Then I need the dropdown box to refresh to include any new choices the user added to the parent table. (I have tried the lookup ones with text box and an ajax callback but those don't seem to refresh the drop down box, AND my users will not like the auto suggest and edit combo boxes.)

Since the pop up to add fields to the parent table is set to refresh the grid that called it, I believe that will trigger the OnGridExecute event. So, in reading various posts here, I am wondering if I can re-populate a drop down box each time the grid executes?

          Re: DropDownBox order

Wouldn't it be by the display field/expression? You have TYPE listed before ITEM NO so that is the sort field. Couldn't you instead display TYPE at the end of the expression so the list is ordered by ITEM NO first?

            Peter,

(Wow, am I helping YOU, for once?)

I have a similar situation. I add the item number as the first thing listed in the drop down box, and it sorts on that.

I've attached a Word doc with a print screen of what this looks like.

            I hope this is helpful.

Robin's answer is how I do it. The only issue I had is that I didn't really WANT to display the number, but it is something I can live with.

Thanks. Sure, I could rearrange but that is not how it should look.

                  Re: DropDownBox order

I don't really know anything about coding, but it sounds like you guys are talking about one of my problems. I am trying to fill in a dropdown list I am using to populate a form to fill in another, using two different tables in mysql one which I am entering my data to the other I am using to supply my dropdown. I ran into the problem where if an item was not in the dropdown list I wanted the user to be able to add it on the fly, but I have found you cannot do that using a dropdown I read to use a lookup, but I found it takes way too long to populate, so i decided to make a button below the form entry stating that "if you do not see your item above click here". the button's action opens a form to add the item to the list(the supply table). When they submit I have a message that says they must clear the form on the prior page and then proceed. This works for this situation, because it is in the second or third item they must select and it will be rare for the client to have to add any products.

                    Re: DropDownBox order

With MySql or Sql you can create a view that includes the fields you want filtered if needed and in the order you want and you just use the view as the source for the DD. Can't you do something similar with DBF? With VFP that used DBF you set the order to an index. Something like 'tablename order indexname'. Not sure how you do that in Alpha.
