Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How Do You Re Publish Security After Resetting A Users Password?

I'm up and running on the Application Server. My security configuration requires all users to change their password on first login.

I had one user attempt to login 3 times and lock themselves out.
So, I deleted this users account, recreated it with a generic password they could change on first login. I re-published the new security up to the server and effectively reset everybody's login. Users who had previously logged in and created their own passwords had to create a new login again. I had intended to require only the locked out user to have to start at first login password change leaving all other users accounts unaffected.

What did I do wrong? I thought I had checked publish new or modified files only (but now I'm second guessing myself). People are going to get ticked off at me if I keep making them change their passwords every time I change security. Should this work as I intended?

    Thanks,
    Stephen

Next time first run the Utility icon to download all current user information, then reset the password, then re-publish. Do it fast enough that no one has made any changes in the mean time. Fundamentally, you should have an online Admin function to do what you want, not deal with the Desktop user interface for this.

      Thanks Steve.
Would you mind elaborating on what you mean by online Admin function? I'm not sure I follow. You are referring to something on the server itself?

I just meant that if you have included a feature where they get locked out, then you should add a feature to your web app that is Admin Only, that allows YOU to unlock the password. I don't have any code that does that, but am sure you can do that with something from the series of a5ws_ security framework functions.

Basically, Alpha give you some security tools which allows you to more or less manage things from the desktop w/o any coding. But as Steve suggests, it is pretty hokey and can be problematic if you have lots of users registering. Then you would need to build your own online admin interface. As Steve points out, Alpha's security functions give you that ability, but you have to build it yourself because Alpha doesn't give that to you.

I would also like to add, if you use active link security tables then you won't run into this problem.

FYI - JDrake means if you use Alpha's method to put user security in SQL, then the Users and Groups dialog is or can be linked to your live SQL database. I personally dislike this feature as it makes it too easy to screw up a live user table. Imagine if you share your Alpha project source with another developer, etc.

I'm not going to pursue the active link tables then, as screwing up seems to be an area in which I can sometimes excel spectacularly. :)
But seriously, I will dig into Alpha's security functions and see if I can build something.
