Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Adding item in linked drop down SQL table

I have a grid. In this grid there is a drop down box. Next to the drop down box is an ADD button.
That way if you need to add an item you can do that.

The issue is when I click on ADD, add another item in the SQL table and close that window, the item does not show up in the drop down box, I have to refresh the whole page to show it.

Of course if I refresh the whole page the other information that is already type in the fields is gone.

    How can this be done.

If you use an edit-combo box instead of a dropdown, you can select AJAX callback. That way it refreshes each time you do the lookup.

Peter I don't see the edit-combo box in the drop down of the Control type.
Remember that this is a new item that needs to be added to the selection. So there is no lookup available, because the item does not exits yet.

What I want to do is when people have added the item in the SQL table and they close that window, that the drop down box is refreshed with the new entry.

Change the field to textbox and check lookup, etc. Again, you can't add the selection directly to teh edit combo, but the edit combo will refresh each time you do the lookup - as long as you check the other box I mentioned above.

The problem is that I need to return a recno and update the table with it, not the description field.

I'm working on the same concept this morning except I would prefer to use a checkbox control rather than dropdown, but even if a dropdown it has to be multi-select, which rules out the edit-combo option...

I have found if I add the {grid.Object}.refresh(true); to the mouse over. After I have added another item and move the mouse over the field it will refresh and the item will be there.

Really? That pretty amazing. Although that might lead to a lot of accidental refreshes when mousing around.

Peter you are right, it works but everytime a person brings the mouse over the field, it refreshes.
I need to find something though to make this work.

ALPHA - can we get the same with the dropdown box to have a ajax callback, every time??

Guys I still do not have this working for me.
I have an selection in the drop down box. And when people select that one in the dropdown list, another grid opens up and I can add the new item to the drop down list The problem is when I submit that one, the dropdown box does not contain the new item. After I refresh the whole page the item is there.

So how do I place a ajax callback after submitting to refresh the dropdown, so that all of the items are listed.

                    Thanks
                    Roelof
