Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Automatacally emailing after record is inerted

    Hello all,

    I have been trying to engineer my updatable grid to send an email after a record is inserted, but have not been able to do it.

    In my AfterInsertRecord i have the following code:

    Code:
    addr = "[email protected]"
    subject ="this is a test"
    body = "a test this is"
    email_send(addr,subject,body,"","","",.T.,"","","default",.F.,.T.)
    with the email client set up correctly. In the 'codeeditor' i can run this code, no rpoblems and I get the email, but once I have copyied it to the AfterInsertRecord of my grid, saved and published, nothing happens.

    Can anyone helpme out with this prediciment??

    BTW the grid is based of a MYSQL table using a connection string to get to it.

    Cheers

      Bear in mind that the server executes the script when a user saves the record.
      Do you have email set-up on the WAS with a default profile? You need the a_email.dbf, etc.. in place as an active link table to your MYSQL email table.

        Re: Automatacally emailing after record is inerted

        Thanks for that Garry.

        I do realise that it only sends when a record is saved... i also have the same code in update as well, but no luck there either. I have set up email in Alpha 5, and can send email via the development software.I found the a_email.* tables in the A5 V10 folder. Do i need to move these to MYSQL, and then active link to A5, or is there something I have missed??

        And if so, how?

        Thanks

          Re: Automatacally emailing after record is inerted

          What I mean is that when the application is deployed, when a record is saved by a user thru their browser it is the WAS that runs the script and it (the WAS) MUST have email set-up on it. You are testing on your local machine which IS NOT the same thing.
          Email by default uses a_email.dbf which is in your a5 exe folder (as you discovered) and not in your app folder. You must add a copy to your app folder and configure email accordingly. I suggest you start with this and when you get it running move to the next step which is an email table in MYSQL with an active link from Alpha as there is no way to use email_send() with other than a dbf table or an active-link table.
          Alternatively, if you do not save a copy of the sent email then you do not need to worry about an email table.

            Here is a sample straight out of one of my grids. This sends an email including an optional personal comment and adds a note to the MySQL contacts table

            Code:
            function AfterInsertRecord as v (e as p)
            dim vMsg as p
            vMsg.from = "[email protected]"
            vMsg.from_Alias = "XXXPortal"
            vMsg.to = e.DataSubmitted.Email1
            vMsg.subject = "Invitation to register for XXXXXXX documents"

            '==== define the message
            dim vM as c
            vM = "Dear "+e.DataSubmitted.name_preference+crlf(2)
            vM=vM+"XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX has created a Document Library "
            vM=vM+"in our new Customer Portal web site. We've created this Library so our "
            vM=vM+"customers and our associates can view and download documents and reports."+crlf(2)
            vM=vM+"We invite you to register to access those documents. Click on the following "
            vM=vM+"link to go to our registration page:"+crlf(2)
            vM=vM+"http://www.XXXXXXXX.com/doc_signup.a5w?ivl="+e.DataSubmitted.contact_link+crlf(2)
            vM=vM+"If the link doesn't work by clicking, please copy and paste it into your browser."+crlf(2)
            vM=vM+"We look forward to having you as a regular user of our Document Library."+crlf(2)
            If alltrim(e.DataSubmitted.note)<>""
            	vM=vM+alltrim(e.DataSubmitted.note)+crlf(2)
            end if
            vM=vM+"XXXXXXXXXXXX, President"

            vMsg.message = vM

            vResult = email_send2(vMsg,"XXX",.f.,.f.,.f.)
            aa = e.rtc.A_AjaxResponses
            if vResult = .t.
            	dim vNote as c
            	vNote="Invited to register on "+date()+" at "+time()+" by "+session.__protected__fullname
            	dim cnx as SQL::Connection
            	cnx.open("::name::XXX")
            	vUpdate="UPDATE contacts SET NOTE='"+vNote+"' WHERE contact_id = "+e.lastIdentityValue
            	cnx.execute(vUpdate)
            	cnx.close()
            	aa[].text = "alert('The Email was successfully sent');"
            else
            	aa[].text = "alert('The Email cold not be sent');"
            end if
            aa[..].id = 100
