Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Launch Adobe reader after an object save as

    hello

i have a label and a read only grid that has a check box to select desired labels.
all works well and the label report is saved but the adobe reader does not launch and i can not print locally.
    here is the code snippet
    Code:
    label.saveas("item_label","PDF",labelFilter,"","c:\A5WebRoot\ClaretPOS\ItemLabel.pdf",.T.,"","","")
would you please tell me what need to be changed so that the adobe will launch in the browser and i can print locally.

    thanks in advance.

    hello

26 people saw this post and two days gone by no help yet.
my question is has this ever worked?
i saw few examples in wiki all never speak about adobe automatically launching.
interestingly, when i place a button in the grid and on the "on click event" if i do the action script to pull up the same report
to print that particular record, then window pops up and that label is there and i can print it locally. something i want.
but with action script i am not able to use the checkbox selection to filter out.
there must be a simple technique. i just can't figure it out.
    thanks in advance.

Re: Launch Adobe reader after an object save as

so far no one has replied
in the meantime i am attempting several ways to print pdf reports so far unsuccessful.
in the wiki the following appears

This example shows how to print a report and deliver it to your Internet user. Since, a paper report is out the question, Alpha Five will compose the Invoice report from the invoice.set, save it in PDF format as foo.pdf, and then start Adobe Acrobat to display it in the client's browser.

The expression ?" + time("hms03") added to the PDF filename insures that you do not open a cached version of the file.

      <%a5
      Report.saveas("Invoice@c:\program files\a5v5\samples\alphasports\invoice.set", "pdf", "", "", session.session_folder + "\foo.pdf", .f.)
      response.redirect(session.session_url + "foo.pdf?" + time("hms03"))
      %>
      1> this does not work
2> the file is saved with out the time extension
3> since the file does not exist redirect does not work
can any one see this and let me know how to print the pdf files using checkbox selections?
      thanks in advance.

Re: Launch Adobe reader after an object save as

You may need to provide more information on how you are trying to accomplish this with a readonly grid...

A couple of notes on what you've posted so far:

        Code:
        label.saveas("item_label","PDF",labelFilter,"","c:\A5WebRoot\ClaretPOS\ItemLabel.pdf",[COLOR="#FF0000"].T. [/COLOR],"","","")
The .T. in red should be .F., otherwise the server will open the saved file with the associated application, not the client PC.

        %>
This works well in a dialog component, as I've used it myself many times. You are correct, the report is not saved with the time extension. But when your browser is redirected to the report location, the time is added as a parameter to make sure that my browser is not pulling a cached version of the report, which could happen if I've viewed a the report in my browser in the past.
So if I'm being redirected to mydomain/myreport.pdf, the url will be mydomain/myreport.pdf?time

Re: Launch Adobe reader after an object save as

          thank you so much
at least one person responded. my program is wine inventory tracking web server based.
1> i have label designed using mysql statement
2> the read only grid has a checkbox that i use to select the desired labels to print.
3> there are two buttons on the grid (1) print this record (2) print selected
4> print this record when clicked generates action javascript - print record for that record done via action javascript alpha provides and works perfect launching the pdf viewer
5> same way when i construct the print record via action javascript and complete the sqlfilter for item.id=1 or item.id = 2 then again the report works well and launches the pdf viewer
6> but when you select few records with check box the grid is filtered but i am not able to send it to the label report nor launch the pdf viewer
if you or anyone can show me how to print the selected records using checkbox either via grid or web dialog i will appreciate that much.

          thanks

Re: Launch Adobe reader after an object save as

I'm still not sure what you've attempted so far and how you are creating your checkbox in a read-only grid.

Here's one way to accomplish what you are trying to do: assuming you have the Action Button feature pack (can't remember if I had to purchase it separately in 10.5 or if it was included) follow the instructions in Video 89 on the Alpha5 videos page. Instead of using the Export to Excel action javascript, choose the 'Open a Report, Letter, or Label Layout' action javascript.

Re: Launch Adobe reader after an object save as

              hello

as i have said before i have a read only grid to filter the records to print. it is easy to add checkbox, just click on "has checkbox" property.
i am using action javascript to print report.
as i have said before when one item to be printed all works well or if all the records to be printed all works well -meaning the report is created and the pdf viewer pops up in the browser and i can save or print.
only when i filter using the checkbox the selected records do not print nor the pdf opens.
so the title should have been how to print checkbox selected records.
              thanks

                final report - problem solved

                how i solved
wrote a callback xbasic to process records on one button
printed the selected records via ajax callback on another button using currentGridFilter() as sql filter. that combination worked and pdf reader pops up.
(when i combined these two actions into one button again it did not work - because ajax being asynchronous both actions are firing at the same time.)

                thanks jeff, appreciate your efforts.
