Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Workbench, Navicat, TOAD for MySQL?

I was a big fan of navicat too until I tried to update to a newer version I was having a couple of issues. I let my subscription lapse and the only option that i was presented was a $495.00 upgrade. I sent messages to find out why but got no answers so I started looking at alternatives and found SQL Maestro. This program is not for learning MySql but it is way more advanced than navicat in my opinion.
    Win 10 64 Development, Win 7 64 WAS 11-1, 2, Win 10 64 AA-1,2, MySql, dbForge Studio The Best MySQL GUI Tool IMHO. http://www.devart.com/dbforge/mysql/studio/

SQL Maestro looks like a very comprehensive utility, moderately priced. Nice data modeler. Many of us who use Navicat love the structure/data sync between databases. I need to find that in SQL Maestro and put in a question on their support line.

Re: Workbench, Navicat, TOAD for MySQL?

Another option that's worth mentioning is SQLyog. Way back I compared Navicat, Toad, MySQL Workbench, and SQLyog using a script that changes columns, adds and removes them along with some other stuff and only SQLyog was able to handle all the changes, along with adding the foreign keys I had defined without messing up in one way or the other.

The other reason I went with them is they were the only ones to contact me, by phone, to offer any assistance needed in making my comparison.

They also have a 64 bit version that I'm using now. https://www.webyog.com/

Re: Workbench, Navicat, TOAD for MySQL?

I was disappointed slightly by certain features that are not present in SQL Maestro. Like autocomplete typing and I didn't like the backup feature or more importantly the restore. To create a view you have to start with a genie instead of just having a new edit window. If I let the application stay open too long I would get some memory location errors and the program would crash. So after running sql Maestro for about a month I have found that it has a few shortcomings.
Then I came across this dms called dbForge Studio for MySql. It is nearly perfect. It has autocomplete the layout is very intuitive and the backup is good. I have been using the evaluation for about a week now and I am really sad that I had not come across this sooner (before paying for sql maestro). When I was searching for these programs neither Sql Maestro or dbForge was found. I tried SQL yog too but didn't like the interface. If you don't have one now or are thinking of changing I would definitely give dbForge a try.

a couple of specific problems I had are

            with navicat
it did not seem to know cast() or union select.
If you manually type in the code window and switched from editing to the builder and back the cast() and sql union code is lost. Navicat would occasionally shut down without rhyme or reason and I lost some code when creating a view.
Navicat has the best backup and restore.

            With sql maestro.
It has auto code formatting which works very well with most functions except the cast() function. If you have cast() in your code the formatting is lost. It does not loose code like navicat. The program crashes after a certain amount of time repeatable.
Backup works I did not use restore because you have to restore the whole database. No intellisense or autocomplete.

            With dbForge Studio.
So far I can't find any problems the auto formatting recognizes the cast() function, union select. I have had the program up for 3 days now no crash. Backup works.

Another absolutely outstanding feature of dbForge Studio is that you can debug procedures. How cool is that?

                Hi Frank

Navicat has just had a big update to version 11 (sound familiar?) Great debugger in there as well.

I downloaded it and played w. it briefly (before my system trashed it). My minimal test left me w. the impression that Navicat is better - at least for me.

I also dnloaded and played a bit. No crashing or trashing. It did quite a bit and was easy to navigate. I am on win 8 64 bit, but downloaded the 32 bit app.

It got trashed due to my OS, not due to SQLyog.

I don't even remember what happened exactly, Dave. I was doing 10-things at once and suddenly the system crashed (WIN-7) and I was forced to do a system restore - and thus SQLyog was gone. Didn't follow up on it after that.

I just downloaded Heidi for MySQL and MSSQL. Seems like a very nice tool and it's free (give a donation if you want). Also has a database compare/synchronize feature: http://www.heidisql.com/.

If you change mysql to mariadb(=mysql) then you get it integrated to mariadb.
