Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Creating SQL Tables with for A5 Web project

I am using A5v10.5. I may need to upgrade to Alpha Anywhere in the future to get all the features I will probably need, but I am on a learning curve here right now with SQL and A5. I started using MySQL, then tried PostgreSQL, and am now using MariaDB with Navicat as a graphical development tool. I like MariaDB. It was developed by the same people that developed MySQL and is Open Source. It is almost identical to MySQL. I want to create SQL tables to access via AlphaDAO connection as either passive or active tables. How far do I need to go with creating the tables before A5 can use them adequately in a web project? Do I need to create all of the primary keys and foreign key relationships when building the tables, or can I take care of that with A5 when building the grids? In other words, where in the development can I leave off with SQL and start building grids with A5?

in version 10.5 or 11 you will need to design your tables foreign keys and relationship etc., outside of alpha, such as navicat, toad or workbench or any other you like including command line. and then you can connect with alpha. I think in version 12 you can use alpha to create tables etc., I won't know since I do not have version 12. that's what I hear.
In other words, where in the development can I leave off with SQL and start building grids with A5?
there is no clear cut border where you will cross that line and you will be in the "mutara nebulus"
lots of things can be done in alpha that are usually done in sql, but again they are done more efficiently in sql leaving less work for alpha to manage or break.
it will be your call to decide where you are comfortable.

Re: Creating SQL Tables with for A5 Web project

Thanks Ghandi. Do you mean that prior to v10.5 that it was NOT necessary to design tables with foreign keys in SQL, but that it could be done in A5? I guess that would mean there was some loss of functionality from v10 to v10.5. I am not sure that is what you really meant....I think I just read it that way. At any rate, would I not be able to define a link between two grids in A5, as follows, without first creating the foreign key > primary key relationship in in the SQL table with Navicat (my chosen tool)?

salesorders.sonumber(pk) > ponumber.sonumber(fk); where ponumber is a table with multiple purchase order numbers (ponumber) for each salesorder number (sonumber), a one-to-many relationship.

I assume A5 needs to see the pk defined for each SQL table, but can I create the link for the tables without having the foreign key already defined in the SQL table?

      Thanks,
      Mike

        nope.
up to version 11 you will design outside of alpha
I hear from version 12 on you can design the tables inside alpha too. ( I cannot be sure since I don't have version 12)

        that is correct.
the reason someone defines a foreign key is for integrity. if they delete some record that is connected to another record, then if the foreign key is defined it will restrict.
to look at any record you don't need fk definition anywhere, alpha can look if it is there it will show.

Can I define referential integrity between grids when linking grids in A5 without having previously defined foreign keys when creating the SQL tables?

I don't think so. that is the function in your backend.
