Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Mobile Applications

I went through a lot of the Videos and the Image Gallery is the only one that references Mobile Devices. Is there more specific functionality coming out for Mobile devices for the grid, dialog, etc...

Reading the statement below makes me feel I am missing the point on something ....if so a clarification would be great

    Demos would be great also...

Our components now support iPhones, iPads, some Android phones and tablets, and some other mobile hardware with HTML 5/CSS 3 web browsers. As of July 15, 2011, iPhones and iPads are fully tested; only a few Android phones and tablets with Android 2.2 and later have been tested; other devices will be tested later in the development cycle. In the case of the Grid, there is support for multiple named layouts, so that the designer can optimize the Grid's appearance for a PC, a smart phone, and a tablet separately as part of a single Grid definition. There is also support for various mobile device capabilities, such as touch interfaces and geolocation, with iOS devices fully tested and some late-model Android devices tested.

    Re: Mobile Applications

Even though Alpha says they support mobile devices, I have taken it to mean, that with the correct CSS, "MobBlue" is very nice, the app works well on the IPad, Android and PC using the web browser. I am working on a project now, and when I switched the CSS to MobBlue, the app looks great on the PC as well as the IPad.

It is possible that when the .net version of the App Server comes out, there will be specific instructions for mobile devices, but not now, as far as I can see.

      Re: Mobile Applications

There is a dearth of information on Mobile Apps on the v11 WiKI and no videos on Mobile Apps. So what's wrong with this picture? But then again, I can't even get grids to work so...

        Peter:

You sound almost as frustrated as I am that there is no cohesive help system for Alpha. The WIKI was a nice experiment, and if you don't experiment, you don't move forward, but the Alpha WIKI has hampered my progress so many times I stopped counting years ago.

I recently posted a message to that effect on the Messageboards, and I also placed a wishlist request for a CHM and/or PDF manuals on the Alpha Poll site. If enough people respond to those, maybe we can get a REAL help system.

          Re: Mobile Applications

One of the great things about Alpha is all of the undocumented features.

Some-days it is just a pleasure to see if it can be done. :)

          Other-days not so much :(

            Re: Mobile Applications

I have implemented a series of test on mobile device.
the TabbedUI & the new scroll grid.

this one test i have on my iphone 4s & 4 works well
with over 300 records scroll up and down ...

then when we tried this on iphone 3 series,
the grid only show 2 or 3 1/2 records.

then when we tested it on a Samsung Android,
the scroll action just not doing anything
showing whatever on the first page of the grid.

i am convince it si 100% my own problem.
but would appreciate comment for your experiences.

            thanks

I'd be interested to know how the sizing of a page and it's components goes when you build a mobile app, all/most devices have different resolutions.

yes, i can't wait to get there,
now i am making it a fix width for the scroll grid

i am prepare to have 8 versions if i have to
                iphone
                android small phone
                android big (samsung Galaxie)
                ipad
                android pad 7"
                android pad 8" (Visio brand)
                android pad 9"
                android pad 10"

i ruled out "Playbook" this afternoon, the web is so slow
absolutely slow and too often only half of our a5w get shown

i see the tabbed ui can adjust itself
i see setting the width to 100% on the grid seems to work
                but the height not reliable.

further, turning some feature on the tabbed ui on/off
would cause the grid to show blank...

like i hide HOME page on tabbed ui...
hmmm disaster, after pressing button to open grid.
the grid is blank.... then show home, all back to normal.

then i never get the "show more" to display properly.
also action button often disappear , i will comment more
when i get to see the next patch

We will publish a document in the coming few days that outlines where we are and where we are going to with Mobile.

Did this document ever get published? The last I remember is Richard saying something (several months ago) about how much he liked the upcoming releases for the mobile app but I'm not aware that anything has been said or released.

                          Re: Mobile Applications

This was published a number of months ago Ken -- see the attachment

Since this was published we have added the approach of including native support into the Alpha HTLM5 mobile framework so that an alpha developer will be able to take advantage of things like the camera, credit card readers, scanners etc.

We expect to start previewing this work in the coming weeks.

I think it is fair to say that if you are planning on building powerful data-driven mobile apps that behave and feel like true mobile apps - you will be very happy with where we are going with Alpha.
