Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to read value onChange Dropdown and use it to populate afield label

    Hi,

    In a Dialog2 (v11) I have a dropdown box, when the user selects a diffrent value from this box I want to change the Label from Texbox fields.

    I should be able to read the value in the onChange Event like

    Code:
    {dialog.Object}.getValue("month");
    but as soon as I put this in the Javascript - Attribute section I get the Error:

    A5_onChange_Error1.JPG

    so where/ how can I get the Value as in the e pointer there is no dataSubmitted which I can work with?
    further more I wrote a render XBasic function I want to call in the onChange event. But even if the only think in the function is
    Code:
    function renderLabels as v (e as p)
        e.javascript = "alert('hello  render');"
    End function
    I can't get it to fire.

    How and from where (what Tab in the onChange Event) do I call this function. When I call it in the onDialogInitialize ServerSide Event I get my alert.

    and then again the render function, I used the help from http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...age+definition ,

    although I have
    Code:
    e.tmpl.languageDefinition = <<%txt%
    <a5:r>LabelName</a5:r>="newLabelName"
    %txt%
    and it is called in the onDialogInitialize function it gets overwritten by the Languageproperties for that field.
    This isnot so bad, as I can put the correct default values in.

    So all in all I have 2 questions
    1. Where/How can I call my above render function in the OnChange Event
    2. How can I get the new value of the dropbox within the render function OR how can I pass it to the render function.

    Thank you for your Help!

    Hey Grinne,

    You almost had it with your onChange event code. You have double quotes around the control name... you need single quotes.
    In order to set the value... or "innerHTML" you need to get at the ID of the label you want to change. Use Firefox to inspect the element of the label.

    For example, on my dialog2 I have a "Year" label attached to a control named PROJYEAR and it's ID is as shown below.

    This code gets the value of the dropdown and sets a label on the dialog to the value of the dropdown. Hope that helps a bit.

    Code:
    x = {dialog.Object}.getValue('ProjMth');
    $('DLG1.LBL.R1.PROJYEAR').innerHTML = x;

      Hi David,

      Thank you for your reply. The Labels I would need to change or in the Header of a Repeating Section and do not have an Id.
      The HTML looks like:
      Code:
      <div id="DLG1.V.R1.CONTAINER_1.TITLES" style="float:left;"><div class="A5container"  style="text-align:Left" ><label class="GlassBlueSFLabelTD">&nbsp;</label></div><div class="A5container" style="width: .1in;" >&nbsp;</div><div class="A5container"  style="text-align:Left" ><label class="GlassBlueSFLabelTD">Label1&nbsp;</label></div><div class="A5container" style="width: .1in;" >&nbsp;</div><div class="A5container"  style="text-align:Left" ><label class="GlassBlueSFLabelTD">label2&nbsp;</label></div>
      So how can I get/change the labels if they do not have their own ID. Will i have to retrieve the complete HTML for "DLG1.V.R1.CONTAINER_1.TITLES" and overwrite this?
      Thank you once again.
      Grinne

        Re: How to read value onChange Dropdown and use it to populate afield label

        Update: I tried to edit the .precalc.ControlHTML on the XBasic tab and add an ID to the labels but seemingly this is overwritten at runtime. Is there a way to add the ID to the labels or do I really have to regex it?

          Re: How to read value onChange Dropdown and use it to populate afield label

          Ok... didn't know you were working with a Container... probably a repeating section... right? I'm not sure if the titles are held in an array we can get to... but... you can wrap the Field Label in a Span Tag and then get to it that way. I'm not sure if Span is the best choice but it seems less intrusive. Using a Div Tag messes up the default label layout... Span seems to play well with the dialog. So, for example, get to your field in the dialog and in the Label Property

          Code:
          <span id='ProjId'>Project Id</span>
          Now you have an ID of your own to use and get to.

          This is just one of the many fantastic things about A5... the ability to wrap the property settings with tags, styles, etc.
