Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Using Image File Reference Fields in Reports

I've read many of the posts regarding image file reference fields, but I still don't understand how to get it to work in reports. Where do you specify that you want the field to be used as an image reference? I've tried using the bitmap object but can't tie it to a field reference. If I put the image reference field (a character field) on the report, all I get is the text. I'm sure I've missed something obvious.

    Thanks

Re: Using Image File Reference Fields in Reports

My database has a company table with fields including name, address, logo, etc. The logo is designated as an <Image File Reference Field> in the grid component. The logo field contains the string "transparentlogo.png". I have no problem displaying the image in the grid and saving the file. The full path for the image is "[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\Images\transparentlogo.png". Now, I want to use that logo in reports. I created a calculated field named "fullpathlogo" that contains the full path of the image that I just noted. I assume I use the bitmap object to insert the image into the report, but how do I specify the path as a calculated field? It has 3 options under "Load bitmap from": Embedded, File, and Library. I think I should use "File," but it seems to only recognize a static path for an image file.

Re: Using Image File Reference Fields in Reports

I just read that DBFs have an actual field type called "Image File Reference." My database is SQL accessed through ALPHADAO connection string. The image reference in my case is stored in a character field.

I think I figured it out. I found "Dynamic" under Filename in the Bitmap Properties detail. I used a5_eval_expression(fullpathlogo) to define my "dynamic" filename. It's working in the live preview.

If you right click on your report in the list of reports and then select SQL Datasource, then Edit DataSource Definition, this screenshot will show you what to do next: http://screencast.com/t/ByD2kckgWQ5 (believe me, I had to look for a long while to find that in the past... kind of buried, right?)

            Hi Carol.

            This works great to display the image in the same report. I have an issue where i have 3 reports;
            Main report [Freeform]
2 x table layout linked reports [both with images in]

If you run the main report with the 2 linked reports, the text fields in the linked reports displays correctly. The images however does not display. If you use syb reports in the main report, then the images display correctly, however, you re stuck with "duplicate" images and text as a result. Linked reports is the way to go, but HOW? do i get my images to display then.

I don't use sub reports so don't know the answer to your question, Cornelius.

Thanks Carol. Your feedback is appreciated. This has me stumped and it seems that some senior members are also slightly baffled. I'm giving up on this.
