Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Methodology used for saving/editing pictures in grid?

    Hi all
I have a table with an associated grid, that holds a Cars list.
I would like now to improve this grid and also give them the possibility to enter a picture for each car.
    My questions are:
    - what data type do you use for that in the SQL table? (including recommended length etc...). In Foxpro, for instance, i used a 250 char field that holds the path for instance.
    - how do i add the picture into my grid for entering? What if they need to upload the picture, or choose from an existing repository in the server?

    Thanks in advance
    Jaime

I would start by watching the Alpha Videos about Image Upload here:
    http://news.alphasoftware.com/v11preview/videos_v11.htm

Look for the Image Upload section at V10FP7

      Hi Carol,
Can you tell me whether the image upload feature is standard in v11, or do you have to purchase it separately?
I don't see it anywhere in my v11 developer.
      Thanks,
      Andy.

          Thanks Peter,
I see the Image Gallery Component as a grid type, but I really just want to provide an "UPLOAD IMAGE" button in the Detail grid part of a contacts table.
Would you recommend I use a button to open an Image Gallery component?
          Thanks,
          Andy.

            Andy,

The IG is for displaying images only. To upload an image create a new action button and in the JavaScript OnClick event select the Image Upload action.

Also, see the following video: V10FP7 Image Upload, located here:

              Hi Peter,
I was/still am getting an error like "your grid does not have any image fields into which an uploaded image can be loaded" when selecting "Image Upload" - although I have added an image in the grid in case this would shut it up. I don't understand what the error message expects of me, but maybe I will try File Upload instead.
              Thanks Peter,
              Andy

Re: Methodology used for saving/editing pictures in grid?

So you have a character type filed that holds the name and location of your image - that's all it is an address for the image. In your grid you would click field type as image then set the image filed type as special and select image reference field. the image upload app will want to see those settings in your grid. Make certain you have your image in a folder that sits inside you development folder - that is the folder where the .adb files resides - an example would be \images\my_first_date: use the alias path in you web setting before this. - That 's it.

Ahhh..thanks Peter C. (and previously Peter G.)...the light has come on and it's working for me. Great job and many thanks. I did not realize that the filename text field had to be assigned to "image" and display format set to <img ref> before the Image Upload script could work.

It is a shame that the transformation expression only allows <Filename> and <ShortFilename>. I would like to rename the image file to something like contact_123.jpg where 123=the contactID. Or maybe you can access the grid row fields using Xbasic?

You can do all kinds of stuff like that - look up a post on the subject by Garry Flanigan.
