Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Popup Grid won't save value

Anyone else have (and importantly, have a solution to) a problem like this?

I have an Action Button that opens a Grid Component for single-record entry in a Model-Popup window. I specified the link in the action so that prospect_ID={Prospect_ID}. This works fine for me in localhost, and did work a while ago (couple builds ago?) on the remote server, e.g. the record that was saved in the popup grid was properly assigned the parent Prospect_ID.

That doesn't work any more. Instead, the new record Prospect_ID always equals 0 (zero).

So, I've tried all sorts of ways to make the assignment. Most of my current attempts rely on a session.Current_Prospect_ID that I can verify is at all times properly assigned. But nothing works, including:
    • setting the field Initial value to session.Current_Prospect_ID
    • Using BeforeValidateNewRecords to assign DataSubmitted.prospect_id = session.current_prospect_ID
    • Using CanInsertRecord to assign DataSubmitted.prospect_id = session.current_prospect_ID

Anyone else dealing with / solved something like this?

Is that session Type N and earlier used as protected?

Re: Popup Grid won't save value

Eric - it's never set as protected, and is type N.

I shouldn't even have to resort to the session variable usage here. The link in the Action Javascript that calls the popup grid should be taking care of things, but it's not.

        Hi Steve,

I thought I read somewhere that session variables are enforced as characters now in v11, so maybe you have to convert them

            Session Variables
Session variables can only be strings (type "C"). While this limitation has always been implied, it has not always been strictly enforced, so legacy code may store other data types as session variables. Going forward, this will not be possible, as it will break session persistence.

Session Variables cannot be created directly from a request query string or POST body. This negates the need to use "protected" session variables, as all session variables are now effectively "protected". In order to create a session variable, you must execute A5W code to read the request variable and create or set the session variable. A request for a URL such as http://localhost/index.a5w?session.name=John(external link) will not create a session variable session.name as it previously would have. Instead, it will create a request variable which may be accessed as Request.Variables.session.name during the lifetime of that request only.

In fact there is nothing to trust in wiki anymore. Some things are true somethings are not. How to know? Last updated notification at the bottom of page don't tell you anything in practice. All pages seems to be updated lately but the data is still outdated.
