Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Get Enter key to act like Tab key in Firefox or Chrome?

    I have found that I can put the following code in the OnKeyDown property for a field and it handles turning the Enter key into Tab key behavior nicely. HOWEVER, this only works in my IE, and not in Firefox and Chrome. My application involves heavy data entry and I KNOW I will hear whines from my users if they can't use the Enter key to move from field to field. Here's the code that works in IE, and I DO want to put it on each field, so I can control which field has the enter key behavior or not (I don't want that behavior in a text area field, for example).

    Code:
    if (event.keyCode==13){
    event.keyCode=9; return event.keyCode
    }

    In googling all over the place, perhaps this is all a slippery slope, and users might just have to learn to use tab key...

    ANYWAY, I see that Firefox knows about the Enter key being pressed, because following code gives me the alert in IE8, Firefox, and Chrome.
    It's just that I don't know how to get Firefox or Chrome to return the tab key like happens in IE8 (code in previous post).

    Code:
    if (event.keyCode==13){
    alert('The enter key was pressed.');
    }

      Re: Get Enter key to act like Tab key in Firefox or Chrome?

      So... found http://www.w3schools.com/jsref/event_onkeydown.asp at W3 schools that says:

      "Browser differences: Internet Explorer uses event.keyCode to retrieve the character that was pressed and Netscape/Firefox/Opera uses event.which."

      So, in all my javascript ignorance, I have attempted the following.. and of course it produces a syntax error. Any ideas?

      Code:
      var keynum;
      if(window.event) // IE
      {
      keynum = e.keyCode;
      	if (keynum==13){
      		window.event.keyCode = 9;
      	}
      }
      else if(e.which) // Netscape/Firefox/Opera
      {
      keynum = e.which;
      	if (keynum==13){
      		e.which.keyCode = 9;
      	}
      }

        Well, I'm thinking I shouldn't be messing with this. Just need to educate my users to use the tab key and 'get over it!'.

          Carol,

          It all sounds a bit confusing to me but have a look at this http://www.javascriptkit.com/jsref/e...ardmouse.shtml
          "since Firefox doesn't set keyCode during onkeypress, switch to e.charCode or e.which instead for that browser."

            You're right, Stephen. It is confusing. I think I'm too tired to try at the moment, but if I come back to this I'll experiment with that info. I did find an interesting article about another way to get the enter key to move from field to field. http://thinksimply.com/blog/jquery-enter-tab My problem is that I'm clueless about how to activate jQuery in Alpha, and I don't know enough about it to know if activating jQuery would have an adverse effect on previous javascript code.

            It really is seeming like way too much trouble with possible ill effects when users change browsers, so I'm really thinking I should leave it alone.
