Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Upsize Genie - I'm doing something wrong?

I'm trying to use the Upsize Genie and I'm getting an error. I'm following the videos, but they connect to Sql Server and I'll be using MySQL, so not all the screens are identical. I should probably be filling in some more info, but I don't know what to do. The wiki is, of course, devoid of info. Any pointers would be appreciated.

    Hi Wendy,

I think it is because the user, password is missing in your specification, I have taken a snapshot of one of my connections to a mysql:

Thanks. I suspected it was something simple like that. Do I just make up a user? Or does it have to be the username and password for my computer?

You can either use the standard Mysql user: root with the password you gave it when installing mysql, or you can create a user, the user is in Mysql, I have attached to screenshots from the Mysql workbench, which can create the users for you, or you can use navicat or a similar product for this.

Oh thank you - that's very helpful. I would have fumbled for quite awhile figuring that out. I attended and on-line Navicat class, but have forgotten everything already!

Keep it simple and just use the root password. For ordinary apps I don't think there is any need to create MySQL user accounts. You can let Alpha handle security instead.

              Thanks Peter,

Now I need to remember what I used! Fortunately, I just installed and am still on the demo. So if I had to, I could uninstall and reinstall and make sure I write it down!

Re: Upsize Genie - I'm doing something wrong?

I agree with Peter on keeping it simple, however, I disagree on using the root user and password. I would create a new user account with the minimum privileges required for alpha to use the database properly. If something went wrong and your system got hacked less damage could result if a hacker did not have full privileges. I would also recommend keeping the port used by MySql behind a firewall. The minimum server privileges I have found that work for Alpha and MySql are: Select, Insert, Update, Delete, Execute (if you have functions and procedures), Show View, Trigger (if your tables have triggers).

I agree with you Frank, root user is known to veryone, so it is only the password they would have to guess, om my server I am having a autogenerated user and password, making it almost impossible to guess the values if anyone would try get access to the database.

                    Wendy,

I would think twice about using active link tables to access your MySQL tables. That will significantly slow down the access. Instead, investigate exporting your tables to SQL and build your connection string to access them directly.

Most MySQL users that I've talked with prefer that.

I use active link tables only for security tables so that I can use the built in security framework.

OK, now I'm really confused? Work in MySQL but export to SQL? Is there some generic SQL then? I thought there were various kinds that were all made by somebody or other?

Re: Upsize Genie - I'm doing something wrong?

What Pat is saying is that the "Upsize Genie" creates active link tables. Active link tables are appropriate for the desktop connecting to SQL (or MySQL). Instead of using the genie, from the regular dbf control panel, click on your table, the from the menu: file/export...

That way you are exporting dbf directly to MySQL w/o the nonsense of active link tables. Capisce?

P.S. start w. just a single table and get that working first in your grid. Do one at a time after that.
