Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    MySQL install help?

Well, I screwed up. When I installed MySQL weeks ago, if I put in a root password, I forgot it and lost where I wrote it down. So, thinking I'd be clever, I uninstalled and reinstalled. Well, it seems to think I have some password that I can't remember - so I can't even complete the install now.

I assume if I uninstall and reinstall that there's some other place that the root password is stored that I have to manually delete if I really do need to start over. Does anybody know where that is? Or have any other tips?

You don't need to reinstall, you run the MySQL Server Instance Configuration Wizard. It will ask for a root password. For typical install, you accept all of the defaults during the wizard.

Well - I had already uninstalled, and it wouldn't let me complete the reinstall without that password. I finally figured out where it keeps stuff that it does not uninstall - ProgramData\MySQL\ etc... So I deleted that and could then reinstall, take all the defaults - (write down my password this time!).

Now I'm looking at a lot of things that I just don't understand yet. I tried doing the MySQL on-demand webinar thing, but for some reason I can't see the visuals, so I didn't get very far there.

Does anybody know where there's a simple "start here dummy" resource for getting rolling with MySQL and getting my first table exported to it? A book, a video, a wiki entry?

Or does anybody have the patience to walk me through the initial steps? For instance, do I start in MySQL to define a connection? I'm trying to implement advice from another thread to start with a single table, use Export, get that working... But, I'm just so unfamiliar that I don't even know how to get started. All I know is I need to tell it what to connect to, and after that I'm quite lost.

With respect to your first image:

          localhost
          3306
          root
          your_password

Then test connection. If it doesn't work, something is amiss.

            Peter,

            Thanks. That's what I needed.

Then I'm stuck again. I just sent you an email. I think I'd be an idiot not to officially do some one on one training to get me started correctly. For anybody else who finds this thread and is struggling through the same thing. When I get it figured out, I'll do a little cheat sheet and post it. Since I'm not a professional developer, I'll need that myself for the next time anyway, and I might as well share!

Persevere Wendy. It took me a long time (with a forgotten password and uninstall/reinstall) to get MySQL on my server machine and up and running. But it is so much more powerful that dbf's it is worth the heartache.

                Lance,

Yes - thanks. I've scheduled an on-line with Peter to get me past that first hump. It would just have been a week of questions here... I'm rebuilding my app in V11 to leave behind a lot of messy housekeeping etc from my original. It's the perfect time to switch to SQL, so I'm not doing work twice. And I don't want to rebuild to leave messiness behind and introduce new messiness by not being smart this time!

                  Wendy,

Youtube is a very good source of "how to" videos.

Search: How to install MySQL Server 5.5 on Windows

Search: How to reset mysql password

                  ... and many more.

                  Good Luck.

                      Wendy,

A good book to begin with is Larry Ullman's MySQL, Visual Quickstart Guide , 2nd edition recommended to me by Pat Bremkamp.

I will humbly note that the latest instructional video from Andy Meer and me covers a lot of the basics of a MySQL install.

                          Hi Wendy,
I see you are going with MySQL - if your database won't go over 10gig SQL server 2008 R2 Express is MUCH simpler to install and use for me.

                            Steve,

I'm going through that training series right now, and it does indeed apply very much. You should have called it "xbasic and Javascript and when to use each and MySQL for Web Applications"! I've also downloaded the TOAD for MySQL (that you use in these videos), and may very well use that instead of Navicat. I like the "it's free" part! - and it certainly looking like it'll meet my needs.

And - a shameless plug for this training series from Steve & Andy: (because when I find something that hits the mark, I get all excited and shout it from the rooftops)

For anyone who's gotten started with A5 and done as much as you can do with the various built-in functions and buttons and things, I highly recommend this training series. I got real lost at first because I didn't understand all the language and didn't have a grasp on the parts. This series doesn't assume zero knowledge, but it does put each topic in perspective first and at each step tells you what other resources are appropriate and how to use them. This is what I've needed. I think when I've completed this training series, even answers to questions on this forum will make a whole not more sense to me.
