Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Tabbed UI Pane Aliases

    In the Tabbed UI builder, when you create a button to open a Grid, there is a spot to enter a Component alias instead of using <DefaultAlias>, but this doesn't seem to have any effect on the id of the element names in the pane that gets opened.

    In some places, I'm trying to use javascript to access values or click buttons, etc, but unless I put these components on an a5w page and load the page from the Tabbed UI, I don't know of any way to know the id of the elements when using a $('elementID').whatever() method.

    Can someone help me with this?

    Thanks.

    Re: Tabbed UI Pane Aliases

    the technique that most users use is to put code in the onGridInitialize complete event to store the Grid's ID in some global js variable.

    e.g.

    window['__mygrid'] = '{Grid.ComponentName}';

    then, when you want to execute a method on this Grid, for sample, .pageNavigate('next'):

    var gridId = window['__mygrid'];
    window[gridId + '_GridObj'].pageNavigate('next');

      Thanks, Selwyn. I can move forward with that. Now I'm curious, though--does putting something in the component alias field have any effect?

        Actually, Selwyn, *one* of the things that prompted this was wanting to "click" an action button using javascript, which I know I've seen a video on in the past, but I couldn't find it in the forum, blog, or wiki. Any idea where that is?

        Thanks again.

          Re: Tabbed UI Pane Aliases

          i just looked at the generated code in the tabbed UI (which you can do to by switching to the xbasic tab in the builder) and I see that in the context of the tabbed UI, the grid alias is always generated by a5, regardless of what value you type into the alias prompt.

          the builder that is used in the tabbed UI is also the exact same builder that is used in action javascript, and in the context of action javascript, if you specify an explicit alias, it IS used there.

          i will think about the ramifications of changing this so that if you set an explicit grid alias in the tabbed UI we honor it.

            Yeah, I've successfully used the defined alias name using Action Javascript, just not with the Tabbed UI as you note. If it is possible to do, this to me makes a lot more sense and would be great, because then you can easily know what the id of the elements are when using a $('elementID').whatever() method. Thanks for the response and the offer to think about it.

            While I'm at it, I had a similar need last week trying to get the element id of something in a child grid opened by a row expander. The builder there is not the same as Action Javascript, but I had the same wish that I could define the GridObject name. Just while you're already thinking :)....

                  Re: Tabbed UI Pane Aliases

                  I have made a change to the TabbedUI builder and the PageLayout builder. Now, if you specify an explicit alias for a Grid (or any other component), rather than the default of <DefaultAlias>, the value that you specify will be used, subject to the following:

                  In the tabbedUI, if you specify an explicit alias, it will be used exactly as specified (converted to upper case). So if you specify 'mygrid' the grid's alias will be 'MYGRID'

                  In the pageLayout, if you specify an explicit alias, it will be prefixed with the alias of the Page Layout. So if the alias for the pageLayout is 'mypl', the alias for the grid will be 'MYPL_MYGRID'.

                  the reason for this is that you can open multiple instances of a page layout component on the same page (or for that matter, inside another parent page layout), whereas there is never a tabbed UI inside another Tabbed UI. by prefixing the alias with the pageLayout alias, we minimize the possibility of a name conflict - multiple grids using the same alias - which would cause a real mess.

                  This change will be in the next update.
