Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Error:Cannot create file... my app is gone

Last night working on my application I saved everything and went to do a backup using Tools/Backup Restore. When I clicked that option nothing happened. I tried it again and same result. I closed A5V11, re-opened the app and tried again. Nothing. I clicked on the Reports tab and everything was gone, Letters - gone, same for every other tab, everything is gone. If I go to the Tables tab I still see my Active Link tables so I try to open one and I get the errors below. So at the moment I have nothing to work on, nothing is there. Pretty disastrous.

Has anyone run into this before? If so, how do I fix it. Does anyone have any ideas?

Instead of doing a "restore", use Window's Explorer to navigate to the backup file and unzip in a temporary directory. Test it there first. If all is well, copy to your original folder(s).

Re: Error:Cannot create file... my app is gone

Hi Peter, thanks for the reply. I had thought of that but my last backup was 24hours previous and I did a lot of work on it yesterday, I was hoping there was something else I could do to retrieve yesterdays work. However, I had an appointment to go to so I switched off the PC, left, came back, switched on the PC, loaded yesterdays program and still everything was gone. So before doing the unzip as you suggested, I just tried one more time to do a compact of the database. Earlier this had not worked but this time it did and my reports, letters etc were all back. I haven't a clue why all of a sudden this compact worked and/or why all the other pieces returned, but they did. I just hope this isn't something that is going to repeat itself because it's pretty disturbing. I do have backups so I could have restored the previous version (I'm assuming) but I would have lost yesterday's stuff.

Anyway, the PC gremlins have smiled upon me and everything appears normal now except I have less hair.

        Thanks for the suggestion.

Was your backup a complete backup or only what was changed?

Good question, I think it was a full backup, at least I'm assuming when I use A5 Tools/Backup that it creates a full backup (less any data files that might be in another directory). I usually try to backup throughout the day but wouldn't you know the one time I backup 24 hours earlier is the day I have a problem. Murphy's Law lives on!

Look to see if 4 files named .adb, .alb, .alm, .alx where the filename is the database name are in the backup.

Sounds to me like the .alx was not backed up/restored and the database compact rebuilt it.
