Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

        Peter that is strange.

I just checked and it is right after m40

        Here is the description

When you define an button using Action Javascript to open a child Grid, Dialog or Custom Component, you can also set session variables at the same time that the Ajax callback is made to open the child component. The session variables can be set to constant values, or to values returned by Javascript functions that you define. For example,* you might read the value in a field in the parent Grid and then use that value to set a session variable.

And for the record - that particular feature (in M41) rocks! Simplifies things a lot!

Re: new videos/features in version 11

Aaarrgggh. Could have used this three days ago! :) I actually spent the last two days working it out on my own...but this solution is much cleaner. Chalk it up to fun learning. I do have a follow on video I would like to request (or a pointer on what to do).

              Here is the background:
I have a dialog that is the parent record (in this case a "Quote" object). Embedded in that dialog is grid that have child records ("Items"). The embedded grid has both an "insert" capability to create new "Items" for the parent "Quote". It also has an edit function on each record to edit that information. In both cases ("Insert" and "Edit"). The grid launches a dialog to edit the "Item" record. Everything works great. The layout capabilities of the dialog component makes it look share.

The issue I am having is how to I refresh the embedded grid after I have done an "Insert" of an item. I am able to launch the dialog to "Insert" the item and it does indeed create a record in the database. But once I close the window with the "Item" dialog, the embedded grid does not show the newly inserted "Item".

Ideally, this is what I would like to have happen.
When you click "Insert" on the embedded grid, it launches the dialog for creating the new "Item". On the dialog, it has the following buttons on the bottom. "Save", "Save and Close", and "Cancel". The "Save" saves the new "Item" but leaves the dialog open for further editing. The "Save and Close" saves the new record and then closes the dialog box. The "Cancel" button will ask the person to confirm the cancel and it will close the window without inserting the record. When you do "Save and Close", it will close the dialog window and refresh the embedded grid with the new record.

I know this is a bit long, but I see this as a standard design pattern for most apps..

              Thanks in advance.....

I have a dialog. In that dialog is an embedded grid. The grid has both an "insert" function to create new items for the grid (that use the parent information in the dialog to "link" it to the parent record in the dialog. And it has the "edit" function for each row to edit a record. The issue I am having is how to refresh the grid after I do an insert.

p.s. Keep these video's coming. They are INCREDIBLY helpful in learning how to do "real" stuff in the system.

One last "suggestion". If you could have a detailed video on setting the "Link" value between and embedded grid and the dialog that is open. I am still getting my head around how to use that ability and a quick video showing a detailed explanation would be very helpful to the newbie (and me).

Quick question: The "Set Session Variables" button shows up when you add an ActionScript to open a grid. But does not show up for the ActionScript to open a dialog. Are you planning on adding the "Set Session Variables" to other Action Script commands?

Actually, a "Set Session Variables" dedicated ActionScript command would be cool. Then you could call that first, and then call any other function that you want. More of a scripting methodology.
