OK - now I just want to understand it! I'm getting ready to do something else and if I can wrap my poor overheated brain around this, I might just get farther on the next one.

var now = new Date();

OK - we're defining a variable "now". How does that relate to the "now" below? Is this a variable within a variable? And I assume Date() is the fact that this is a date field? Is "new" something JS knows about?

var y = now.getFullYear();  
var m = now.getMonth();
var d = now.getDate();

OK - these are defining variables y, m and d.... I assume getFullYear(), getDate() and getMonth() are things JS already knows?

alphadate = m+1 + '/' + d +'/' + y;

And then we're defining "alphadate" in a format that the field will understand?

{grid.Object}.setValue('D','STATUS_DATE',alphadate);

And finally the part that's pretty obvious, setting the value in the Detail part for the field Status_Date to be our lovely new alphadate.

new Date() is JavaScript speak for a new date. But it's not like the xbasic date()

try this code as a test:

var now = new Date();
alert(now);

We're extracting the date elements so that we can format if for Alpha

Right. We're formatting the date into an Alpha friendly string.

OK - some of this isn't something one dissects into "new" and "Date"... It's just new Date(), which is a Javascript thing.

So - we're starting with new Date() which is JS-speak. Then we're reverse engineering it to get the data we need out of it. Then we're formatting that in Alpha-speak so it will understand it when we put it in the field.
