Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Cascading DropDownBox - Only one "child" cascading DropDownBox updating...

I have a dialog. On that dialog, I have three DropdownBoxes.

    DropDownBox1 (Parent)
    DropDownBox2
    DropDownBox3

DropDownBox2 and DropDownBox3 are cascading choices linked to DropDownBox1. When I run the dialog and make a selection from DropDownBox1, DropDownBox2 updates correctly, but DropDownBox3 does not update. Is this a limitation of the cascading drop down that you can only have one "child" dropdownbox.

    i believe it is.

instead of using dropdowns you might consider using edit combos.

if the edit combo is set to:
    1. populate using an ajax callback
    2. not allow caching
    3. turn on dynamic filtering
    4. user must select from list.

then if the two child dropdowns are converted to edit-combo, their contents will be dynamically populated when they are opened. their dynamic filter could be set reference the value in the parent dropdown.

alternatively you could used dropdown that are NOT set to be cascading, and in the onChange event of the parent dialog you could repopulate the two child dropdowns yourself.

Great feedback. Will update the application with your edit combo input.

Your feedback fixed what I was trying to do. I was able to set up a test dialog using three text boxes configured as edit-combo. Worked great. The "child" controls updated great. And, the save/restore functionality of the dialog to my MySQL database also wokred great. Saving the state of the text boxes and restoring them correctly.

I do have one follow up question. Is there a way to mimic the behavior of the dropdownbox. Specifically, have the control show the "Fields To Display" selection that matches the "Field to Return". For example, let's say I have a list of cities and city codes. The control would show the city name ("Kansas City"), but behind the scenes the value of the field would be the code ("KC"). Right now, after they have selected the city "Kansas City", the control shows the "KC".

p.s. Open to suggestions or alternatives.

          Hi Dion,

I use dummy (unbound) controls for this. Set it as the edit combo and to auto-fill the (hidden) returning control. Leave it unhidden for testing purposes, then hide when you go live, the user is none the wiser
