Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Allow dialog to be closed only if not 'dirty'

    Using Action Javascript to open a dialog component to edit or add records, has anyone successfully implemented a method to check if the dialog is dirty and not allow it to be closed until the record is saved? I've tried a method that uses the onBeforeHide Window javascript Event in the Action Javascript action, but it's a bit cumbersome and I get varying results - mostly unsatisfactory. I can post it here to be perfected if need be, but wanted to see if anyone has a better approach.

    Where is the onBeforeHide event in the dialog... I can't find it??? Walk me through getting to it and I can have a look. Thanks.

      It's not in the dialog, it's part of the Action Javascript action that opens the dialog, at the bottom there is a "Window Javascript Events" section.

        Re: Allow dialog to be closed only if not 'dirty'

        This is what I was putting in that event:

        Code:
        if (typeof window.top.dlgIsDirty == 'undefined') return true;
        if (window.top.dlgIsDirty) {
            A5.msgBox.show('Notice','You must first save or cancel changes.','O');
            return false;
        } else {
        	return true;
        }
        And then in the dialog, in each control's onChange Event:

        Code:
        window.top.dlgIsDirty = true;
        And in the Cancel and Submit button's onClick Events:

        Code:
        window.top.dlgIsDirty = false;

          Re: Allow dialog to be closed only if not 'dirty'

          Yeah... I realized you're calling your dialog and so I did that from a grid and found the event... thanks. I'll have a look at your code, but here's what I've come up with. I'm working in the dialog alone and not depending on the calling grid to figure stuff out.

          In the Dialog onInitializeComplete event

          Code:
          $('A5dlg1.TITLE.TOOLS').style.visibility = 'hidden';
          This is to hide the closing button (X) in the dialog title.

          In the Dialog onStateChange event

          Code:
          if (e.isDirty==true)
          	{
          	window['dlgstate']=true;
          	}
          else
          	{
          	window['dlgstate']=false;
          	}
          This event detects a state change from clean to dirty etc. This sets a window variable to be used in the dialog close button we add.

          Add a Button to close the dialog and put this code

          Code:
          if (window['dlgstate']==true)
          	{
          	alert('Window is in edit mode and cannot close');
          	}
          else
          	{
          	{dialog.Object}.closeContainerWindow(this);
          	}
          Maybe we can use e.isDirty right here... haven't tried yet... will do that next.

          So overall... open the dialog and let the dialog alone decide if it can close. Now going to look at your code.

            Re: Allow dialog to be closed only if not 'dirty'

            How about this:

            Keep the onBeforeHide event code as is,
            and put this in the dialog's onStateChange event:

            Code:
            window.top.dlgIsDirty=e.isDirty;
            That way I don't have to get rid if the (X) or put this line in every control!

            Seems to work in the limited testing I've done. Let me know what you think.
            Would be great to have a 'canCloseDialog' event.

              Yeah, works very nicely. I didn't like getting rid of the close X either. I always forget about stuff like window.top and window.self - nice reminder... thanks.

                And I wasn't thinking about the onStateChange event until you mentioned it. Sometimes just discussing something helps.

                And, I like your concept of handling everything in the dialog itself, but without an event to trap the close, I'm not sure how to do it.

                Well, this seems to be working, so will go with it until something better presents itself. Thanks for your help!

                  Great news! I got the pre release 2745-3949 and discovered that there is now a property to check on the Open A Grid Component (OR dialog component). It is 'Warn Before Closing If Grid In Window is Dirty' and it is working beautifully!

                    Hi Carol, where is this property on the dialog component?
                    I need this, but do not see it. What section is it under?

                    Other, Javascript?

                      Found it. FOr anyone else looking for it, this property is not in the Dialog itself. It is in the Open Dialog Component Javascript Action properties (from a parent grid/control)

                        I am trying to use this property but it does not seem to work, maybe I'm not using it right?

                        From my Grid I am opening a Dialog using Open Alternate Editing view for Current Record. I check Warn Before Closing if Component in Window is Dirty and save.

                        I open the dialog and make a change to the data, I then click the [x] and the dialog window closes with no warning. Is there something else I need to do?
