Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Moving records from one table to another

    Alpha 5 v11 - re: web application
Is it possible and fairly easy after users register and their record is saved to a table, for the sys admin to view the records and send the records to one of two other tables. Basically doing a sort. When a record is sent to another table the original field name of one field would be changed but the data in the field would remain the same.

I figure the field name change would be simple field mapping, but would moving the record from one table to another be a big deal. The original table would then have no record, and there would be only one copy of the record in the table the record was moved to.

Is this something Alpha can automatically code, or is custom coding (xbasic or javascript) needed?

    Thanks,
    John

    John:

Which backend are you using (dbf or sql)?

I have an application which does nearly the same thing you are requesting. I use PostrgreSQL and simply use the SQL commands to copy (and map when necessary) the appropriate fields, and then use the SQL delete commands to remove record as desired. I always do this as a single transaction to ensure the copy was completed before committing the delete.

Re: Moving records from one table to another

      Brad,
      I am using MySQL.
I started to try this last night and got the tables ready, I constructed the grid with a button on each record, but came to an end when I needed to code the button with Action JavaScript which would make the ajax callback and run xbasic to handle what was to be done with the data being sent back. I guess the xbasic would handle the mapping and saving.

Also, my grid with the button to view the original saved records before reassigning was read only, but the Alpha rules stated that in order to send back for saving, the fields had to be editable, otherwise only the primary key field gets sent back.

Just had an AHAH! moment. The grid would have to be editable so I could add a "Directive" on each record as to which table it should be saved to. The code on each button is the same, so the code needs information to make its decision which table to save to. Very basic concept, but it's amazing what poor performance you get from a tired mind.
