Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Error Trying To Connect Alpha to SQL Server

I have installed SQL Server on Win XP system. Have created a SQL Server database (AlphaSQL). Have created 2 tables, Customer and Notes. Have created a Login in Security with User name of AlphaSQL and password of alpha following tutorial sqla5. Go to A5V11, tools, external database, alphaDAO, new, Connection name AlphaSQL, select build, SQL Server. Enter User name of AlphaSQL and password of alpha and test connection. Get following error mesaage -

[Microsoft] SQL Server Native Client 10.0[SQL Server]Login failed for user AlphaSQL SQL State is:2800.
[Microsoft] DQL Server Native Client 10.0 Packet size change not supported by server, default SQL atate is: IM006.

I have TCP/Ip enabled, port 1433. Server restarted, etc.

    Any suggestions?

Re: Error Trying To Connect Alpha to SQL Server

Since this is my first install with SQL Server, do not know how to connect remotely with sql management console. I supposedly am able to connect remotely, as I did not get the normal error message that I got with Win 7 when I tried to install on that system, even though I enabled TCP/IP, set port to 1433, and restarted that system. Only able to connect locally with Win 7. Running MySQL without problem.
I went thru SQL Express forum to try to fix Win 7 problem and followed every solution without success.

        I have
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express installed if that is what you mean and have connected with an instance of SQLEXPRESS. Do not know if that means I have connected remotely or not.

To connect locally to the SQL Express use localhost\SQLEXPRESS in the connection string

Re: Error Trying To Connect Alpha to SQL Server

If the default installation settings are correct the problem is probably in the connect string.
SQL Express can be moody sometimes try this <dot> \ SQLExpress or yourip \ SQLExpress or (local host).
Secondly, if you install locally and not on another server, you always have access to database by your Windows user name Identification. Can you open the database with MSStudio?.
if it does not work then the problem is with SQLServer and not A5V11.

Re: Error Trying To Connect Alpha to SQL Server

Thanks, I tried all of the above and keep getting a variety of error messages. I tried (local) without user name or password and it connected. The sample in sqla5 tutorial indicated that Credentials 'Use Windows Authentication' should be unchecked, requiring a User Name and Password. When I looked at Login setup in in SQL Security, the password indicated 15 characters instead of the 5 I put in. Maybe that was problem. Somewhere in Alpha documentation I read you you had to have remote connection set up for AlphaDAO link. Obviously not.

The error you are showing your first post is a ODBC error so how are you trying to connect A5 to the database. Did you perhaps by misstake select DAO instead AlphaDao?

Re: Error Trying To Connect Alpha to SQL Server

Either you choose to authenticate using windows authentication or using sql server authentication in which case the "sa" account is the system administrator account that is created by default. If you uncheck 'use windows authentication' then you need to connect using sql server authentication. Both are supported in A5.

Re: Error Trying To Connect Alpha to SQL Server

I may have chosen DAO by mistake, but I know enough to choose AlphaDAO, because of all of the warnings given in the SQL tutorial regarding A5. I only get the first error message I mentioned if I try to connect with SQL Server Authentication, which requires a User Name and password.

In the sqla5 tutorial he chose SQL Server Authentication when installing SQL Server, which requires putting in a password, which is probably why he unchecked Windows Authenication at time of connect. I did not chose that when I installed SQL Server on Win XP laptop.

What is password for "sa" account login?

Re: Error Trying To Connect Alpha to SQL Server

When you install SQL server you have 2 options: Windows authentication or Mixed mode (=SQL server authentication AND Windows authentication)
If you choose mixed mode then you MUST enter a password for the SA account or you cannot proceed.
My guess is you selected Windows authentication. Alpha can use that but if you like SQL server authentication you have to reconfigure your SQL server

Thanks, Frank. The first time I installed SQL Server I picked mixed, because that is what sqla5 tutorial recommended, but I did not know the User Name was SA, until you mentioned earlier and I then say it under security logins. Not knowing what SQL Server authentication buys me, I will stick with works for me at the moment.
