Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Layout Table Report

    Anybody doing this? I don't find any threads. Also no examples in sample databases, or videos.

    Baby steps. Trying to get 2 line report header. Wiki says - Expression (Xbasic). Note that you can create expressions that concatenate several fields and crlf() calls, and then use remove_blank_lines() to handle unused fields, such as the common case of the optional second address line.

    So I tried
    calc->Ccompany -" " +crlf() +"Active '" +calc->Ccasetype -"' Cases - Detail"
    as xbasic expression in a cell, but the crlf() is ignored. Other parts work, so text is all on one line.

    Anyone using this type of report?

    Bill.

    Hi Bill,

    What happens if you put a number into crlf(2)?

      I'd use a Rich Text Field.

        Re: Layout Table Report

        Im not even sure how to insert a RTF into a cell of layout table report. There is an Edit Cell property that just gives static text, expression (I used), and image. When I convert the report to html, the cell in question shows this

        <td class="reportColumnDetail reportColumnBoxColumnM reportColumnBoxColumnL reportColumnBoxColumnR " style="font-family:font:Tahoma;font-size:16pt;font-weight:bold;" colspan="6">{a5_html_label(calc->Ccompany -" " +crlf() +"Active '" +calc->Ccasetype -"' Cases - Detail")} </td>

        I don't find anything in the wiki about a5_html_label()

        Bill.

          Oops - gotta read and remember there is the new Layout for reports.

          There is also Static HTML
          There you can build the HTML you need with the values in the record using - {fieldname}

          So it's more than Static HTML...

          Use the HTML source tab to make sure it's doing what you want.... ie actually doing a <br> rather than showing it as text...

          I don't see where to pick the fields from. I just typed them in... or copy from the expression area and then make the needed HTML changes.

          Although it doesn't seem to like report based calculated fields.... but it does like global calculated fields ... added one for the table under edit table structure - table - global calculated fields.

            Re: Layout Table Report

            Thanks Al,

            So maybe this is progress? :-) Actually I overlooked Static HTML since there was no display window. But fields do not work for me there.
            Code:
            calc->Ccompany
            Active {calc->Ccasetype} Cases - Detail
            I tried fields with and w/o {}. In both cases the report displays the exact text string. Likewise I dropped the <br> since it was displayed as literal string. It does display on 2 lines though.

            So in Expression option the fields are interpreted and rendered correctly, but not in the other options. Have you gotten field values to display in Static HTML?

            I guess the first question is if you have done much w/ these new layout table reports?

            Bill.

              Not sure why local calc fields don't work.. while fields and global calc fields do work.

              When using the HTML editor, I use the source tab rather than the WYSIWYG tab and change &lt;br&gt; to <br>
              Or enter the <br> in the source tab.

                DOH! I was merrily clicking along in WYSIWYG. Yes, problems were revealed in source view and now it works. (WYSIWYG was changing calc-> to calc-&gt;) Still did not need to use <br>, and I got 2 lines.

                I'll close this thread now, but if you have had success designing these layout reports I smell another thread coming!

                Bill.

                p.s. (did not need the <br> because WYSIWYG put in <p> tags. I'll switch back to <br>.) And I changed v11 to default to source view!

                  You're correct, when the {calc->fieldname} is entered in the HTML source tab, the calc field displays. What I noticed is that in the expression mode, the F5 list of calc fields shows the field, but the expression builder says its invalid....calcfield_layoutreport.PNG

                  Can you confirm that?

                      Yes, calc fields in expression builder always generated <invalid expression>, but evaluated correctly at runtime. DBF field names seem OK in the expression builder.
