Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grid column shading

    I'm trying to visually separate my grid columns by using column shading. However, it doesn't seem to work -- I check the Alternate Column Shading box, set even/odd column band sizes to 1, and check Row Separator. Alternate row shading is off. But the grid insists on shading the rows, not the columns.

    Here's the Xbasic code generated by the Designer:

    tmpl.has_row_separator = .t.
    tmpl.alternate_bands = .f.
    tmpl.even_band_size = 1
    tmpl.odd_band_size = 1
    tmpl.alternate_column_bands = .t.
    tmpl.even_column_band_size = 1
    tmpl.odd_column_band_size = 1

    What gives?

    This is something very odd; it works if I use the artists table but not if I use the Invoice headers table. Think I'll report that.

      Thank you for your reply. Hopefully this will get fixed eventually -- it is not a must-have for me right now, more like a would-be-nice-to-have.

        Re: Grid column shading

        Turns out that everything works perfect as Jerry Brightbill pointed out to me but the color used for the GrXXXXGridDataAlt css selector is extremely light so very hard to see in case of column shading (close to invisible) whereas row shading is reasonably visible although very light as well. If a row has a text area like in the artists table then the height is larger compared to a row like in the invoice header table & that has a side effect that column shading appears to be better visible or not. I did suggest a style tweak.

          Has anyone here tried to do both row and column shading at the same time? I have and it doesn't appear to work.

          Could someone verify that for me? I can use either row or column shading alone, but if I try to do both at the same time, I only get the column shading. (I posted this elsewhere but got no reply, so I thought I'd try here!)

            You can set the background for every other field using the cell in-line style using for example "background-color: #e34444;"

                Re: Grid column shading

                That would certainly work, but ....

                This is a very long row, it has over 50 fields going across, most of them 1-3 digit numbers, and a lot of rows going down. Hence the need for the shading.

                If I manually set the column background, I'm going to have a lot of work to do when something changes.

                Are you verifying, then, that the row and column shading provided in the grid will not work together and your suggestion is the best next step?

                  Re: Grid column shading

                  I don't know if Alpha considers this as expected behavior or as a bug; you'd have to ask or file a bug report. I have not seen too much of both row&column alternate shading in applications so yes my suggestion may turn out to be the next best thing...

                    To do every other row, you can use the conditional style on each field. In the condition put:

                    round(data.rowNumber/2,0)=data.rowNumber/2

                    That will change your style for that field every other row.

                    You have to add that to every field in the row if you want, but it will always do every other row no matter what.

                    I'm sure there Is a way to do this with JavaScript or even Xbasic in one of the events, I'm just not there yet ....

                      FYI: I found out from Selwyn, both row and column at the same time do not work. See other post for another take. I'm still working on it though!

                        Having posted that a moment ago, there is a ROW based client side event where you can do that. (search for conditional in grid properties.)

                        Put the above script into the condition and you have every other row shading. (Then you can use the column shading to do your columns.)

                          Re: Grid column shading

                          So, having looked for a solution to do both column and row shading, I must say. It looks terrible that way, I don't recommend it. :)

                          However, the theory does allow you to do more things. The conditional row style is much more powerful than just clicking the row shading box.

                              The grid I am using this on has a lot of hidden fields. They are unaffected. I believe it is affecting the row <TR>, not the individual columns.
