This is actually possible BEFORE you insert your record. However, it does not lend itself well to multiple users inputting at the same time.

Server-side Events: OnInitialValueCalculate

flag = cn.Execute("SHOW TABLE STATUS LIKE 'orders'")
dim rs as sql::ResultSet
rs = cn.ResultSet
e.newValues.id = rs.data("auto_increment")

This will give you the NEXT value to be the AI value.
I would say this shouldn't be used unless there is only one user using it because you could very easily fool it by opening the grid twice without submitting one of them first. Both would get the same key.

I am using a dialog component to insert and edit rows in a grid. Backend DB is Sql Server. In this specific table, i have a primary key set as identity, auto-increment.
When inserting a new record, is there a way to show the user what value has been generated by SQL ? I would like to just show an OrderID field with either the value of the OrderID we are editing or the new OrderID being generated in case of insert.

when editing the afterDialogValidate event handler:



put insertion point in the action (as if you were going to edit it)
then click 'action scripting' button on the toolbar
then click 'show variables exposed by this action'

you will see the information you need listed there
