Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Application Server Installation

If I install a full version of A5 V11 on my remote server, is there any reason to install the stand alone app server? Is there any detriment to having both installed? Once I finish my app development, I will likely uninstall the full version of A5 V11 and then rely on the stand alone server.

    Re: Application Server Installation

If you have the full version on the server, you can develop the app on the server remotely. The full version includes the app server. But you will need a license, and will probably have to go through Alpha to remove it from the full version to put it on the app server. Also if you want to have the full version moved to another computer, then you will need to have the development license moved also.

My thoughts are that I prefer to do my development on my computer, not on the server. I can see the benefits of being able to directly work on the program online, but I would prefer to have it working, and tested, on my system before taking it live, unless it is a staging site. But being able to log in from any, and every computer, and work directly on the app... I can see the benefit.

But my thoughts are, if you are going to have it there in the first place, why remove it? And if you are going to remove it, why have it there at all?

      Re: Application Server Installation

I have a licensed stand alone server, so that is not a concern.

A downside is that I suppose I will have to leave the full version of A5 running in order to keep the server alive. My concern was having both installed and creating some conflict. I like having the full version on the remote as I am working with some old Access files. The Access database is one that I created years ago and suffers from many design flaws. I plan on breaking down tables/data and creating the SQL backend from it. Adding a remote connection to the mix just complicates if for me.

When everything is up and running, I would remove the full version and replace it with the stand alone server to recover HD space. This is a hosted account with a fixed amount of drive space. It would also allow me to transfer that install to another PC should that need arise.

      I appreciate your input.

I am no expert, and don't know how to set this up, but apparently the server only runs on 1 core. And you can set each instance for a separate core. I believe the license is per server, so you should be able to have as many instances as you want running. But I am not sure how to set it up so that they do not interfere with each other as far as ports are concerned, or how to set it up so that they do not interfere with each other. But I do know it has been done.

I agree with Bill and like to keep my development on my local computer and publish to the server. I keep my SQL database local too, and publish changes using Navicat. I like the separation even though publishing takes more time. Its my safety net; if I screw up locally I don't necessarily cause any problem on the published copy. Its easy to reverse and download live data from the server to local if I want to publish simulated-live website to my localhost for testing.
