Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Dialog2 Component Not Saving Data From Default Value Controls To A Bound Table

I have a genie-style dialog2 component that has several controls on it.

Any control where the user "enters" data into a control works just fine. The data is saved to the table the dialog is bound to.

There are two textbox controls that have default values assigned to them.

One control has: session.__protected__clientid in the default value property.

The other control has the expression: =date() in the default value property.

Both controls display the default values (a session id in one and today's date in the other) when the dialog is initially rendered, again, like there are supposed to.

When the submit button is clicked, values that were "entered" into regular controls are saved in the corresponding table, but the two fields that had default values do not pass their values to the table. Both of these fields are then blank in the table after the submit occurs.

For fun, when I "enter" values for the "clientid" control or today's date contol, then the "entered" values are passed to the table like they are supposed to be.

It is just "default values" that don't get passed to the table.

Any ideas what I may be doing wrong?

Thank You in advance for any help you can share with this issue!

If I make these fields dirty by changing something in them, then hitting submit, whatever is in the fields are then saved.

How can I automatically make them dirty? Is this the real solution?

Re: Dialog2 Not Saving Data From Controls That Have Default Values To A Bound Table

there is a new feature in the latest update:

Dialog Component - Saving Values that are Not Dirty - By default, if you use the Server Side Action Scripting action to save submitted data to a table, only dirty fields are saved when an existing record is edited. In the DialogValidate and AfterDialogValidate event you can not use Xbasic to adjust the list of 'dirty' fields by setting the value of the e.dirtyColumns property. The default function prototype for these two events explains this in more detail.

Al thanks for asking the question... I was working my way through this one also.

Thanks Selwyn for the quick response.

Yes, thanks Selwyn for your response!

I think I get it that I have to make the fields dirty even though the user has not touched them.

I see the prototype notes in the dialogValidate server-side event (not in the afterDialogValidate prototype by the way) but as a struggling xbasic guy, I'm wondering if this might maybe make a good topic for another short video. I've got to think that this must be a common enough need that a video might may be in order. Your videos are priceless for those of us who are not fluent in xbasic (yet).

Otherwise, I'll play with the code until I (hopefully) get it right. I think I have the concept (we must "force" the untouched controls to be dirty) in order for them to be saved.

Just a little fuzzy on how to make this happen.

          Thank You Very Much!

I am curious to know if you were editing an existing record, or adding a new record.

If you were adding a new record, there should be no need to 'force' the control to be dirty as all data submitted is entered into the new record.

If you are editing an existing record, then only dirty fields are saved.

            Please watch the video.

If you have a situation that is still confusing you, then create a sample component that demonstrates the issue and I will explain why what is happening is happening.

            Thanks

              Got it!

              Just had to add:

              e.dirtyColumns = e.dirtyColumns + crlf()+ "clientid" + crlf() + "Application_Date"

to the afterDialogValidate event (Just like Selwyn said).

              Thanks Again!!!

Actually, this was adding a new record using a "genie-style" dialog.

                I put the code:

                e.dirtyColumns = e.dirtyColumns + crlf()+ "clientid" + crlf() + "Application_Date"

in the afterDialogValidate event before I saw your post with the video and now the grid is saving the default values in my "clientid" and "Application_Date" fields.

                  Selwyn,

My Dialog 2 form - created form the invoice template - is a new record - and is not saving any data that is automatically calculated, or filled in by a textbox with a look-up properties set to yes.

I have not tried the suggestion that you gave to Al, but will by the end of the night.

                  Running: Build: 2351 Addins: 3857

                  Thanks
