Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Cannot start Alpha5 anymore after applying patch 2365_3859 from Jan. 16th 2012

    Hello!

Anyone else have any problem after applying last patch from today? I went to update page from my bookmark outside of Alpha5 and download latest patch (2365_3859 (released on 16 JAN 2012 09:31 AM)). When I applied patch on WinXP SP3 and want to run Alpha5 I get this error:

    Alpha5OrdinalNotFound.png

When I reinstall back version 2291_3841 from Dec. 6th 2011, all work normal. But If I click button "Check for news and updates now" at start time I get notice that "Release candidate is available".

So which one is now correct one? Shouldn't be that two messages the same?

This is NOT an Alpha Five bug.

libeay32.dll and ssleay32.dll are part of the Open SSL library. This is a 3rd party library used by Alpha Five and many other applications.
These file are installed with Alpha Five, but they are also installed by other programs to provide secure communications,
        including database drivers.

Prior to release 2365_3859 of Alpha Five, the Alpha Five installer installed these two files into the
        Alpha Five program folder.

However, if an older version of the DLL was installed and loaded on your system
(which was quite possible becuase many different programs use the Open SSL library, as mentioned earlier)
you could have run into issues because when starting Alpha Five.
The error you would have received was:
"The ordinal 2630 could not be located in the dynamic link library LIBEAY32.dll"

This was happening because the older version of the DLL that was already in memory (loaded by some other program)
did not have a function in it that Alpha Five was calling.

As a result of these problems, in build 2365_3859, we now install libeay32.dll and ssleay32.dll in the Windows System32 folder
(as long as we are installing a newer version of the DLL is one is already installed), and furthermore we DELETE the previously installed
version of these DLLs from the Alpha Five program folder.

So, if after installing build 2365_3859, Alpha Five does not start, then the most likely reason is that the installer was NOT able
to install libeay32.dll and ssleay32.dll in the Windows folder (look in Windows\System32 or Windows\SysWow64 to see if you can find the files there)

In this case, we suggest that you reboot your computer and NOT start any application at all (so that there is no chance that some other application
loads libeay32.dll or ssleay32.dll) and then reinstall the Alpha Five update.

For good measure, reboot again after installing the Alpha Five update.

The try to start Alpha Five again. It should now start.

If you still cannot start Alpha Five do a search of you entire computer to see if there are any other instances of libeay32.dll installed.

        Delete these unwanted instances.

Re: Cannot start Alpha5 anymore after applying patch 2365_3859 from Jan. 16th 2012

With Selwyn's help I found bypass for this problem but I can also confirm that this is Alpha5 Five (or installer) Bug, at least for me.

I found that in my System32 folder was libeay32.dll with date 12/11/2000 (file version 1.1.0.1, product version 0.9.5.1). This file Alpha5 Installer didn't replace with the newer one, which should be 12/15/2011. My old dll file wasn't used by any program, because I could rename or delete it. The other dll file was copied ok.

Bypass: Copy this two dll (with date at least 12/08/2009 back to A5V11 or copy both to System32 and overwrite older.

          Reproducing the Bug:
          1. Install Full A5 on clean PC (there isn't any of that two dll's in System32). >> A5 will run Ok, and both dll are in A5V11 only (date 12/08/2009).
          2. -> Now in System32 manually copy libeay32.dll with date 12/11/2000 >> after applying patch A5 will not run and this dll was not replaced.
            or
-> Now in System32 manually copy libeay32.dll with date 12/08/2009 >> after applying patch A5 will run and this dll will be replaced with newer (12/15/2011).
          3. So this mean that installer doesn't replace file with year 2000 but will replace file with year 2009.

Although I will find a workaround, the updated libeay32 has killed my ancient CRON.EXE, reporting it cannot find ordinal 354.

I would suggest to put that two files back to A5V11 folder with next patch release, like it was before. That way we eliminate DLL hell like we know before .NET. Now is only Q of time when some other program will start showing errors, because of changing that file in System32. Program anyway first look in its own folder and then go to System32 folder so I don't know what we gain with that moving. I didn't notice any problem regarding that till now.

Maybe at runtime, A5 can check dll version. If is not recent enough, then it can try to use it's local version if possible, otherwise show msg about the problem.
