Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Get Google map - lat/long

    Is there a way to get the latitude/longitude from an address using G-maps?

    If you use lat/long mean the 2500 Google request limit is waived?

    Yes there is, there is an action js to do it or an XBasic function check out the wiki: http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/How+to...a+database+V11
    The 2500 limit is for geocoding so yes it is waived when you use lat/lon

      The 2500 limit is for # of addresses for which you can request the lat/long in a day. Once you've got them stored you can use an unlimited # it seems. In my experience you must use lat/long for the map if you're displaying more than a couple of records' data (>10 is a no go, i believe).

        Hi Peter & Frank,
        while believe you 2 are amongs the few who tackle with geo coordinates.
        is there a way to run the Geolocation function and have the values be
        saved in session.variables directly ?

        instead of binding it to a dialog ? then painfully save them to session.variable

        Thanks

          Re: Get Google map - lat/long

          by the way, these are the function listing in java that populate my dialog.
          which is working. Can someone share how to add an extra function
          to perform the ajax callback right after these codes to save
          the coordinates in session.variables ?

          appreciate input...

          function geoLocateSuccess(pos){
          {dialog.object}.geolocation.accuracy = pos.coords.accuracy;
          {dialog.object}.geolocation.altitude = pos.coords.altitude;
          {dialog.object}.geolocation.altitudeAccuracy = pos.coords.altitudeAccuracy;
          {dialog.object}.geolocation.heading = pos.coords.heading;
          {dialog.object}.geolocation.latitude = pos.coords.latitude;
          {dialog.object}.geolocation.longitude = pos.coords.longitude;
          {dialog.object}.geolocation.speed = pos.coords.speed;
          {dialog.object}.geolocation.timestamp = pos.timestamp;
          try{
          populateControls_fireCallback();
          }
          catch(e){
          alert('Callback function error : ' + e.message);
          }
          }

          function geoLocateFailed(error){
          switch(error.code){

          case 0:
          alert('Geolocation error : An unknown error occured.');
          break;
          case 1:
          alert('Geolocation error : Permision to use GeoLocation Service denied by user');
          break;
          case 2:
          alert('Geolocation error : Position not available');
          break;
          case 3:
          alert('Geolocation error : Timeout');
          break;
          }
          }

          {dialog.object}.geolocation.clearWatch = function(){
          if (typeof {dialog.object}._watchID != 'undefined'){
          navigator.geolocation.clearWatch({dialog.object}._watchID);
          delete {dialog.object}._watchID;
          }
          }

          function populateControls_fireCallback(){
          {dialog.object}.setValue('LATITUDE',{dialog.object}.geolocation.latitude );
          {dialog.object}.setValue('LONGITUDE',{dialog.object}.geolocation.longitude );
          }

            Re: Get Google map - lat/long

            From the wiki:

            Google has a query limit of 2,500 geolocation requests per day and a rate limit to prevent abuse.
            The rate may be what Peter was bumping into.

            From Google Maps API doc:

            Use of the Google Geocoding API is subject to a query limit of 2,500 geolocation requests per day. (User of Google Maps API for Business may perform up to 100,000 requests per day.) This limit is enforced to prevent abuse and/or repurposing of the Geocoding API, and this limit may be changed in the future without notice. Additionally, we enforce a request rate limit to prevent abuse of the service. If you exceed the 24-hour limit or otherwise abuse the service, the Geocoding API may stop working for you temporarily. If you continue to exceed this limit, your access to the Geocoding API may be blocked.
            Note: the Geocoding API may only be used in conjunction with a Google map; geocoding results without displaying them on a map is prohibited. For complete details on allowed usage, consult the Maps API Terms of Service License Restrictions.

              So what is alpha using for the geolocation if this is prohibited when not using a map?

              Sorry I think the geolocation api is not a google thing.

                  Being able to upload your location to a database. Bob Moore has a video displaying this but I cant get it to work. This one actually has a map but the geolocation code is on the button and is not working.

                    HI,
                    I asked this question many times on this board,
                    strange thing, not a single reply.
                    I begin to wonder if no one else using it ?
                    or they expect me to go Google college to learn?

                    i saw the video # 40 and have used it and get it to work very well.

                    i was just wondering if one can share the idea of
                    placing the geaolocation trap on a simple .a5w page

                    typical our famous index.a5w where we place our login
                    so when a user/anyone open this page.

                    i want to trap his/her geolocation codes into an sql table.
                    more like a visitor log ???

                    again, this to occur before he/she login in.
                    just stand at the front door, i want to know who ?

                    Then, once he/she logged in properly.

                    i want the geocode as

                    session.latitude
                    session.longitude

                    you know we would have his "ulink" by then.

                      OK so it cant be directly in a tabbedui or at least for me. Put it on its own page and voila. But very inaccurate as far as I am concerned within only 600yds from an android cell phone. But at least it works on the phone.

                        What type of Android phone are you using? Samsung phones have a known GPS bug (and there is a fix). I routinely see GPS results <50 ft if outside or near a window.
                        My Motorola Android phones get similar results and need no patching.

                            Good to here.

                            For others I found that without the GPS fix on Samsung the problem was browser independent. The only possible problem for some users is that the GPS fix requires "rooting" the phone.
