Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How do I copy certain data from one table and add it to new rows in another

    I'm hitting a wall with something as relatively simple as this:

    I have a master lookup table (DBF) that I want to use to select rows (using the checkbox select grid.) I then want to copy certain columns only from the selected master table as new records to another table.

    For example:

    MASTER
    Rec First Last Phone Notes
    1. Jim Smith 444444 About Jim
    2. Joe Lars 555555 About Joe
    3. Jill Jones 666666 About Jill

    Let's say I select Jim and Jill from the master. I now want to insert data from those two records to another table, so the result would be something like this:

    OTHER TABLE
    FName LName
    ... ...
    Jim Smith
    Jill Jones

    In effect, I need to execute xBasic that would do something like the following pseudocode

    Scan MASTER table filtered on selection
    Create a new row in OTHER
    Replace FName in OTHER with First in MASTER
    Replace LName in OTHER with Last in MASTER
    End Scan

    Thank you for any help, code suggestions or pointers as to where I can find proper documentation on how to do this!

    Re: How do I copy certain data from one table and add it to new rows in another

    I suppose i need to write server side xBasic into the javascript event of the button. Such as:
    RECORD_TO_VARS() to dump MASTER field data to variables
    ADD_BLANK_RECORDS() to add a blank record to OTHER
    OTHER.<Fieldname> = <Variable from MASTER> to populate the fields in the OTHER table (e.g., OTHER.FNAME = FRIST)
    FETCH_NEXT() to get the next record in MASTER

    Yes?

      This should get you started as well...

        Great. Thank you for the wiki pointers. As they say, if you give a man a fish, he eats for a day, but if you teach a man to fish, he eats for the rest of his life.

          The wiki tutorial used the following example:

          dim tbl as P
          tbl = table.current()
          tbl.enter_begin(.T.)
          tbl.LASTNAME = "Simpson"
          tbl.FIRSTNAME = "Bart"
          tbl.enter_end(.T.)

          But this does not return the variable submitted in the grid fields but rather submits "Simpson" and "Bart" as static entries into the table fields. Where am I getting it wrong?

              Re: How do I copy certain data from one table and add it to new rows in another

              Yeah... but once you've been taught to fish all you ever get to eat is... fish...

              Anyway...

              Do you know how to put a button on your grid, at the row level, then use the onClick event of that button to call an Ajax Callback? If not, have a look at Video # 91 - it takes you through the basics of creating an Ajax Callback. Generally, an Ajax Callback is Javascript (client-side) calling an XBasic function (server-side). You use Action Javascript to set up the basic calling params and then create the shell of the XBasic function.

              Once you've got your Xbasic function shell created you would add...

              Code:
              dim tbl as P
              tbl = table.open("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\employee.dbf")
              tbl.enter_begin(.T.)
              tbl.emp_FIRSTNAME = e._currentRowDataNew.Fname
              tbl.emp_LASTNAME = e._currentRowDataNew.Username
              tbl.enter_end(.T.)
              tbl.close()
              Put in your own table name, and where the code reads e._currendRowDataNew.FIELDNAME you put your grid field names in.

              The tbl.FIELDNAME is where you add your table fieldnames.
