Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    OnCanSubmit event

    Hi

    I am trying to create a timestamp when a user has edited a record.

    If I put (excerpt)

    var_TimeNow= GetTimeString();
    {Grid.Object}.setValue('G', 'svc3_ptime', {Grid.RowNumber}, var_TimeNow);

    in one of the "onBlur" events of a field, the value is set properly.

    If I put the same code into the "OnCanSubmit" event, it gives me a syntax error.

    If I put a function call into the "onCanSubmit", the function is run. alert('I'm here') .

    If I put the code above into the function-> same error again.

    Hmmmm... I'm lost.

    Re: OnCanSubmit event

    I time stamp all my records first with the date they are created and then if they are modified I timestamp another field with when the record was last changed. I do this in the Detail form, so if you are doing it in updateable grid then things could be different. On the Detail form Server-side Events I put the following in the "CanUpdateRecord" and "CanInsertRecord" events:

    with PageVariables
    Result.Cancel = .f.
    Result.ErrorHTML = ""
    end with

    cpStampLUC( DataSubmitted.rsRecAdd_Person_SysID, DataSubmitted.rsRecAdd_Date,\
    DataSubmitted.rsRecChg_Person_SysID, DataSubmitted.rsRecChg_Date, \
    Args, PageVariables, Result)

    In my Control Panel under the "Code" tab I define the "cpStampLUC" function like this:
    FUNCTION cpStampLUC AS V (byref recAddID as C, byRef recAddDate as C, \
    byref recUpdID as C, byRef recUpdDate as C, \
    Args as P, PageVariables as p, Result as p)
    with PageVariables
    Result.Cancel = .f.
    Result.ErrorHTML = ""

    '--- For debugging only in W/P mode define the session variables.
    '--- No data gets into the system unless these 3 pieces of info are present.
    '--- snPrsn is the only session variable really needed here. The other two vars
    '--- are just here for safety check. skDS is a LINK field and gets saved to each
    '--- new record automatically by A5.

    'DIM SESSION.SKDS AS C = NEW "EDD1E1B4-9750-4389-80AB-71E8F5FA3DE1"
    'DIM SESSION.SKUDA AS C = new "B67268E9-2F0D-4EEB-B295-C015F2FB572C"
    'DIM SESSION.SNPRSN AS C = NEW "1"

    if eval_valid("session.snPrsn") = .t.
    dim prsnID as C = NEW convert_type(session.snPrsn, "C")
    if eval_valid("session.skUda") = .t.
    if eval_valid("session.skDs") = .t.
    if Args.IsNewRecord = .t.
    recAddDate = DATE()+ " " + TIME()
    recAddID = prsnID
    else
    recUpdDate = DATE()+ " " + TIME()
    recUpdID = prsnID
    end if
    else
    Result.Cancel = .t.
    Result.ErrorHTML = "UPDATE cancelled: required Session state info is missing: Dataset ID!"
    end if
    else
    Result.Cancel = .t.
    Result.ErrorHTML = "UPDATE cancelled: required Session state info is missing: User Access!"
    end if
    else
    Result.Cancel = .t.
    Result.ErrorHTML = "UPDATE cancelled: required Session state info is missing: Person ID!"
    end if
    end with
    end function

    IMPORTANT:
    I turn off "Check for write conflicts" on the fields that I stamp.
    Also, it is very important to set the Display Format of the date/time fields. I set the format so the time will not get truncated from the field. I use:

    time("{grid.clientSideDateFormat} 0h:0m 0s am",<value>)

    In the past I would uncomment the three DIM session variables when I wanted to add records in Working Preview mode. Anymore, I don't use WP mode except for checking the layout of a form.

      Re: OnCanSubmit event

      I just do this in the CanInsertRecord for logging user/date created:
      Code:
      DataSubmitted.CreateUser = a5ws_GetCurrentUser()
      DataSubmitted.CreateDate = now()
      And I do this in the CanUpdateRecord for logginf user/date modified:
      Code:
      DataSubmitted.EditUser = a5ws_GetCurrentUser()
      DataSubmitted.EditDate = now()
