Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Read only grid from View, linked to Editable Form; help with initial value

I am sure this must be easier than I am making it out to be....

What I want: Read only Grid made from a view, click on row, edit in form view (either alongside the grid, or pop-up window)

What I did to try to accomplish this:
Read only grid, based on a view. It must be a view (not a table) because I need all the human, readable words not IDs and Codes.

Linked Grid/Content: I added a component, which is component that is an Editable Grid made with a Form layout.

The problem: The existing Data does not appear in the linked form.

My assumption is that the problem is in the form, because the DisplaySetting->initial value is null.

The instruction at the bottom of the properties pane says that I can use session variables as default values. Is that what I want? I tried entering session.CompanyCode. But, that simply gives me the text Session.CompanyCode (rather than the intial linked value).

I cannot find the appropriate page at the wiki telling me what to do.

Is there another way that is preferred for accomplishing this?
Should I be creating an Action Button, that will open the Form???

    Thanks

I found a nice page of help at the Wiki about using a Button Genie.

No where on the page does it tell you where to find the Button Genie.....

Re: Read only grid from View, linked to Editable Form; help with initial value

Component Type: Grid is Read Only; Grid contains a Detail View Part

Query: Base on: SQL Select Statement; Edit SQL in Query builder, creating a query with the tables you are editing as well as whatever view(s) you use to make those values readable. Select Primary Keys, and for those views or joined tables that are only there for displaying data, set them as read-only.

The Detail View is the "Form" you want and you can put whatever readable or unreadable fields there, though I'll note that in controls like drop-down, radio, and checkboxes, one (readable) value can be displayed on the form while a different value (ID, code) is saved. Look in the Choices property for a field of these types for info on that. And an advanced approach is to use lookups in your textbox fields to return the "readable" value and simultaneously fill in a hidden field of the update-able table data.

There's lots and lots of videos (almost too many for a beginner, I realize), so check them out.

    Hope that helps?

Re: Read only grid from View, linked to Editable Form; help with initial value

      @Chris - thanks for the direction -

I have been watching the videos, but, without knowing what the key words are that I'm trying to do, it's impossible to know which of the 100s of videos to watch.

I'm not getting very far with the your instructions. I'm very comfortable with SQL, but, A5 won't let me see a working preview, and tells me that my primary key is not in the Grid Fields array.

Which would be fine, except for the fact that I have included the primary key field......

further, one of the tables that I want to use is being totally schizo.... the table works fine for me in sql. And I've been using it while I play in A5. However, when I try to utilize it as a linked table in the SQL builder - lo and behold - none of the columns that A5 tells me are in the table are part of that table!!!! (ie, TableA has Col1,Col2,Col3, but the builder offers be Col4,Col5,Col6 which are part of a totally different table!!!!)

      suggestions?

Re: Read only grid from View, linked to Editable Form; help with initial value

Surely someone can steer me towards the right video to watch. What I am trying to do is very very basic. I am watching many videos, and learning to do wonderful things, but, I cannot proceed with any of the wonderful features until I can solve this initial, elementary task.

Perhaps I am using the wrong words to describe what I need to do.
Perhaps I'm making things too complicated.

Perhaps I should simply be using Lookup within an editable Grid, where the display value is different than the stored value.

Example: My Contract table has fields for:
        EntityID
        PositionCode
        CompanyCode
        ContractDate
        ContractID

I want to be able to see the EntityName in the grid, but store the EntityID (and similarly with the positioncode and companycode)

I have explored doing this(unsuccessfully) by:
        - having the grid be based on a read-only view, with a detail form.
        - having the grid be based on an editable table, with lookups

I am not making any progress.
I will gladly commit to Alpha 5 once I can accomplish this seemingly minor task.

Re: Read only grid from View, linked to Editable Form; help with initial value

Ok - I made progress, and am just posting the solution back here.

What I was trying to do: build a read only grid from a view with updateable form, using A5's interface for that as an option

Solution: Build 2 totally separate components
          - a read only grid based on a view
          - an updateable form based on a table
          - add a button to my read-only grid, with a Javascript directive to open the updatable form on click

I found the answer by having my SQL mentor, who doesn't know A5 but knows the concept of A5, and knows how I work and think.

He told me I need to break the task down into building blocks - ie, get the grid to work, get the form to work, then marry them together.

And, as soon as he suggested that I build 2 separate components, I knew it would work. And it does.

I spent HOURS working on this over the weekend, and he got me going in less than 5 minutes....

I'll start new threads for my new questions, now that I'm over this hurdle.
