Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Text to Speech?

    I keep seeing an A5w page called "__a5runTextToSpeech.a5w" on my publish list. Hmmm - new feature coming? Does anybody know anything about this? It's got me curious.

    It is used in the Image Gallery feature pack to read out the descriptions for an image in the gallery.

    Howerver, a5 v11 has built in text to speech. you can go to the interactive window in a5 and type:

    TextToSpeech("hello wendy")

      Hi Wendy,

      Martin put together a sample showing how to use the .NET speech synthesizer in XBasic:

      You can also return generated speech on an A5W page (and therefore in components) doing something like this (but I highly recommend lots of testing):

      Hosting Page

      Code:
      <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
      <HTML xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en" xml:lang="en">
      <HEAD>

      <BODY>
      Speaking a message.

      <AUDIO src="TalkToMe.A5W" controls="controls"></audio>
      </BODY>

      </HTML>

      TalkToMe.A5W

      Code:
      <%a5

      Context.Response.ContentType = "audio/wav"
      dim Sv as DotNet::Services
      dim assy as DotNet::AssemblyReference
      assy.filename = "C:\Program Files" +  if(Is64BitWindows(), " (x86)", "") + "\Reference Assemblies\Microsoft\Framework\v3.0\System.Speech.dll"
      dim Text as C = "This is a test. It is only a test. If this had been a real emergency... I'd be under my desk crying like a baby!"

      Sv.RegisterClass("Speech", "Synth", "System.Speech.Synthesis.SpeechSynthesizer", assy)
      dim TestTalker as Speech::Synth

      dim Stream as System::IO::MemoryStream
      TestTalker.SetOutputToWaveStream(Stream)
      TestTalker.Speak(Text)
      Stream.Position = 0
      Stream.CopyTo(Context.Response.OutputStream)
      TestTalker.SetOutputToNull()
      TestTalker.Dispose()
      %>
      Enjoy!

        Cool! Now I'll have to think up something cool for it to do on my web site, just because I can. In my spare time...

          Re: Text to Speech?

          In my spare time i'm building a english wordtrainer for my son :-)

          So according to the example in the wiki http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/DotNet...w+in+Version+1

          I have this function that i call in an ajax call back (everytime if a word in the dictionary gets focus):

          function SpeakLoudEnglish as c (e as p)

          'SpeakLoud = "alert('You submitted a value of: " + js_escape(e._currentRowDataNew.lastname) + "');"
          dim english as C = e._currentRowDataNew.engels_vv + " " + e._currentRowDataNew.engels
          dim Sv as DotNet::Services
          dim assy as DotNet::AssemblyReference
          assy.filename = DotNetPath()+"WPF\System.Speech.dll"
          dim Text as C = english

          If Sv.RegisterClass("Speech", "Synth", \
          "System.Speech.Synthesis.SpeechSynthesizer", assy)
          dim TestTalker as Speech::Synth
          TestTalker.SpeakAsync(Text)
          else
          ui_msg_box("Speech Demo","Synth class not registered")
          end if

          end function
          e._currentRowDataNew.engels_vv + " " + e._currentRowDataNew.engels are just two fields in a grid.

          Everything works as a charm in localhost and livepreview. But not a peep when published

          I'm totally green with dot net, so all help is welcome

          I also tried Kurt's approach but have no clue what code to put where en how to pass the words to the pages :-(

            Re: Text to Speech?

            Perhaps I am missing something here, but this can't work. This is xbasic code. it executes on the server. So in theory, if there was a speaker attached to your server and you were sitting in the same room where the server was located, you would hear something being spoken. But the browser is another location. So they will not hear anything.

            It seems to me like you would need to generate an audio file on the server and then send that back to the browser as your response to your callback. Then your browser could play the audio file.

                  Thanks, Selwyn your remark made clear what was going on. Having a speaking server is a lot of fun :-)
                  Solution was very easy:

                  1. see post #3: Take Kurt's TalkToMe.a5w page

                  I only altered: dim Text as C = var_engels_vv + " " + var_engels

                  2. open it with pagevariables in a hidden div at an event of your choice:

                  http://screencast.com/t/ckj7iP6MLGn

                  3. and this is the result :-)

                  http://screencast.com/t/Ocy6uW5BS

                  Added information:

                  It seems that for proper working it is required that in Firefox Quicktime-plugin 7.7.3 is installed.
                  If not: the sound is not played until another application is opened or even worse: after every row render a browsertab is opened,
                  Maybe other plugings work also properly.... But quicktime does the job well.
                  Tested on window vista and windows 7, both firefox 17.01
