Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    USPS function working?

    From two servers, it appears to me the USPS functions aren't working right now.

    Could be an A5 problem, but more likely a USPS problem? Anyone else experiencing this?

    You can try this even in Interactive. I'm getting this:

    Code:
    ?usps_citystate_from_zip("25430")
    = city = ""
    state = ""

      Re: USPS function working?

      I've confirmed that this is currently broken due to changes implemented by USPS. The next prerelease patch will include a fix for this. It is also possible that the other USPS functions are similarly impacted. I will be testing these as soon as possible and we will fix them as well if required.

        Re: USPS function working?

        USPS_City_From_ZIP(), USPS_CityState_From_ZIP(), USPS_Delivery_Status(), USPS_State_From_ZIP(), and USPS_ZipCode_Lookup() have now all been fixed to work with the changes implemented by USPS.

            Re: Frank's question, I know the usual method, but I'm averse to applying a pre-release build on current production sites, and I'm wondering if there's any alternative that doesn't take a whole lot of your time. My guess is that there's not, but worth asking.

              I must have missed something over time. Could you please tell me how to get the update? I have many grids that use these features in the onblur event and it is preventing fields from updating. I guess I need to come up with a solution to check if this service is operating before automatically updating the fields since this feature is out of my control and could change again. Makes me worry about Google maps as well.

                  The prerelease is the only way to make this available.

                  The fix has been submitted to a common code base, so if a V10 patch is issued then the fixed functionality will be included in it.

                    Re: USPS function working?

                    Here's an alternative function for looking up zip code info using a different web service. It has been written to also work in V10.
                    Code:
                    function USPS_Zipcode_Lookup2 as p (zip5 as c)
                    	dim Response		as c	= ""
                    	dim ResponseTimeout	as n	= 30000 '30 seconds
                    	dim WebServiceURI	as c	= "http://www.webservicex.net/uszip.asmx/GetInfoByZIP"

                    	zip5		= left(ltrim(zip5),5)
                    	Response	= http_post_page2(WebServiceURI,"USZip=" + zip5,.f.,ResponseTimeout)

                    	USPS_Zipcode_Lookup2.City	= extract_string(Response,"<CITY>","</CITY>")
                    	USPS_Zipcode_Lookup2.State	= extract_string(Response,"<STATE>","</STATE>")
                    end function

                      This is one of the "gotchas" of depending on any web service, particularly a 3rd-party one - it may become temporarily or permanently unavailable at any time.

                          Check that your passing in a character string, not a number to the function.

                          Code:
                          ?USPS_Zipcode_Lookup2("16020")
                          = City = "Boyers"
                          State = "PA"
