Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Compare rows (like pick 3 models of cameras, and see them in columns)

I suspect there are a number of ways to accomplish this, but I wonder if A5 has automated the process....

Take a grid, with LayoutOptions.HasCheckboxSelectColumn toggled ON

Once a few records have checkboxes, I would like to add a button that takes the Selected Rows, and opens a new tab or window or page, and shows the data in a pivoted, columnar, side-by-side.

This is commonly seen for comparing products, such as camera, coffeemakers, etc.

Do I create 2 components, one as a standard grid, and one based on a SQL query that brings in the data in a pivotted fashion,
and open the 2nd via a button?

Or, is the 2nd, pivoted layout really a Report?

    Or???

The "side by side" you are looking for is called "snaking columns" and you can set that on any grid. First the grid has to be Component Type = not Tabular. Then in Properties set the value for Repeating Columns to a value > 1. Then you will see an option for Snaking Style.

ok - I understand how to create the component.

How do I get from a traditional grid to the snaked component?

I've added a checkbox select column to NormalGrid.

I figured I could add a button somewhere, titled COMPARE, and define an action that would open the SnakeGrid, where the link or filter is set to equal the checkboxed items.

But I'm not seeing any actions that look appropriate....

Re: Compare rows (like pick 3 models of cameras, and see them in columns)

If you look at a typical Compare option like this one: http://www.dell.com/us/soho/p/laptop...~0~5930679&p=1

The user checks the items they want to compare and when they click the big "Compare" button, upper right, it opens the snaking grid with the selections. You can use the grid option Has checkbox selector column to give you a checkbox that is not tied to a database. Then there is a client-side event named onGridRowCheck that you can use to capture whenever they check/uncheck a row. I believe there is a video on using the checkbox selector column. The Dell link I show above also has a nifty method to only show the Compare button IF they have selected two or more items to compare. Afraid I have not used that onGridRowCheck event so do not have any code handy.

            Thanks Steve -
I have the Has Checkbox Selector Column
I did not have the ClientSide Event named - on GridRowCheck - I'll go look at that

I was hunting for the info in Action Scripting

We will have to get Richard to get those Dell guys to use Alpha Five so we can get one their guys up on the forum.

Figuring out how to do what you are requesting here is what I like to do the best. I just have not had the time since September to devote to such things.

ok - the video showed how to make a text-based button, to get the check-marked rows:
                {grid.Object}.filterCheckedRows();

but then it goes on to tell how to make a 2nd button, using action scripting, to export to Excel.
                Which is, indeed,nifty.

But I want to take the selected rows, and open a grid component.....

i'll keep playing and reading, but I welcome any additional shoves

Well, I learned lots of nifty things about working with checkboxed rows, but not how to go from the items that have been checkmarked, to my alternative grid component that has snaked layout....

and, while the videos show how to get a count of how many are checkmarked, I have not yet learned how to limit the user to , let's say, 3 checkmarks before making the flipper to the snake component....

                    So.... here's where I'm at.

I know how to get a filtered, checkboxed, selection from Grid1.
I know how to indicate on a row in Grid1 if I've checkboxed more than 3 rows

I know how to make Grid2 as a non-Tabular, snaked grid, with 3 repeating columns

I don't know how to get from Grid 1 to Grid2, carrying the filtered selection IDs with me.....

                    Is this an Ajax callback?
                    Is this a Server event?

I have a bit more work to do tonight and then I can play with A5's solution to this challenge:
