Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Hi Satyanarayana,

Pictures say it much better than I can.
Alpha has made the help button far more useful than it used to be.
The wiki search assistant and the video finder will lead you to answers
    for many questions.

Is there an over view somewhere? What if we just want to use security, but not make it a big deal. Just have a login screen with or without a password. No screens necessary to maintain users and passwords (that can come in the future). Just a simple "how does it work" summary.

      1. What to do to enable security, does it create a table? Where is this table what is the table name? Does this single table provide everything needed for security? Can this table be maintained by the developer without building a UI?

      2. What happens when security is enabled on the server? What happens if security in the app is included but it is not turned on in the server?

      3. In a new developing app I want the appearance of security without the problems associated with it. Ideally I would turn it on so I could have a login screen, but not even use the security system until the very end of the project.

      4. Can I turn the security on, have Alpha build the necessary table(s), then disable it so the login screens accepts a login name but nothing is verified?

      5. Does Alpha create login screens for me? Do I have to do it? Is there some "canned" "One-click" to build option?

I think, for me, I would like the appearance of security without a "fort knoxs" system. Just something simple to show it is included. It can be enhanced down the line.

Web security creates 4 tables that includes everything for basic security.

Web security performs as it was directed, not to be confused with the way you want it to perform.
If you have not turned web security on, only the security you provided will be used.

3,4, and 5 seem to be pretty much the same question.

You can create a page with a textbox for username, a textbox for password, and a button to click on to give the appearance of logging in. Set the action for the button to go to the next page.

Thanks Gregg, that is a good start, I appreciate your time.

          Follow up:
          1. When I turn on and initiate security in an application are the tables created as dbf of sql? What determines this?

          2. I realize I can create a "fake" login screen. What I was wondering is can Alpha create a login screen for me, so it is automatically tied to the correct tables, then can I just tell it to "allow any" login. Or alternatively I can manually go in and add users with blank passwords to the table, to get started.

          3. The end game goal here is to have everything in place so I can learn it as I go along building the rest of the app. What I *do not* want is for this to interfere with my development and testing. I would like to have the security tables in place, so as I do my development I can grab and display the current user, display on the screen etc. Just kind of learn the system variable stuff along the way. Then by the time I get the app developed I should have gained enough knowledge to enable the security system.

          4. I don't want to spend a bunch of time learning the security stuff at the beginning, but I want it in place so I can program against it for the end BUT I don't want to miss something while creating 100's of screens.

By default, Alpha creates .dbf files that it places in the web project folder. If you want to use sql tables, it will take a little
            more effort on your part.

Alpha provides a great "starter dialog". It takes a little configuring on your part.

Steve Wood sells a marvelous web template , that handles security and other aspects of the project, letting you concentrate on the "meat" of your project. For more information about Web Template, visit http://www.alphatogo.com/products.a5w . It still takes some configuration effort on your part, but there are several people here that use the product for website.

If your goal is to have security, but do not intend to offer self registration, you do have the option of using the web security GUI to add/remove/edit users as well as assign permissions to pages and components.

Re: Can any one tell how to add users to websecurity in server?

              Hi Bill,

              Here's my 2-cents:

              1. When I turn on and initiate security in an application are the tables created as dbf of sql? What determines this?

dbf, not sql. Even if you use sql you will still use the dbf security. There is a way to port security over to sql, but you don't want to go there because it's a complex little process.

              2. I realize I can create a "fake" login screen. What I was wondering is can Alpha create a login screen for me, so it is automatically tied to the correct tables, then can I just tell it to "allow any" login.

In web security there is an icon that creates a login component for you (it's a dialog). But you need to insert that dialog onto an a5w page. Usually you would call that page index.a5w.

Or alternatively I can manually go in and add users with blank passwords to the table, to get started.

If you want you can just create one user. Call it whatever you want. Not sure if you can have "blank" passwords. You will have to set the password validation to 0 - it might work?

Okay

              4. I don't want to spend a bunch of time learning the security stuff at the beginning, but I want it in place so I can program against it for the end BUT I don't want to miss something while creating 100's of screens.

              Okay
