Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to Toggle Search Part "After" Submit

I have this in the AfterSearchSubmit in the Client Side Event.

    {Grid.object}.toggleVisibility('SEARCH_PART');

When I first place it there, it worked great. Then, I made some changes to the search part by making it freeform on the first field and hiding the rest of the fields. From the first search after that, I get an error message: Unable to get value of the property 'display'. Object is null or undefined. While the search works, the Search Part does not go into hiding. Removing the code eliminates the error message. I removed the freeform and set the freeform back to it's original state but the same error message and performance takes place.

Creating a new grid still produces the error message. There are 5 fields in the search part and the error message pops up on all fields which tells me it's not a corrupted field. I created a new grid on a different table but still get the same error message. So, it's not table corruption. Next, I used the code on a previous version of the database and it still produces the error message. I'm using the latest build and also tried reverting to a previous build. That didn't help either.

I'm wondering, what value of what property 'display' is it referring to? Why did it work great prior to the changes? At this point, I don't think it has anything to do with changing the layout of the search part.

Perhaps someone would copy and paste the code into the Client-side Events and see if it works. Of course you must have a search part. Don't know if this has anything to do with it but my fields in the search part are kookups.

    Thanks much,

    kenn

Thank you for that idea. What I had to do to get rid of the error is to select the 'Enable show / hide of Search Part'.

Re: How to Toggle Search Part "After" Submit

Hi Frank, Thanks for taking the time to check this out. I think there is still something that is not quite right. The 'Enable show / hide of Search Part' is meant to hide the search part when the grid is opened. There are situations where one might want the grid hidden at that point. However, in other situations, clicking to open the search part is an extra and nuisance step/ There is no reason why the search part cannot already be open and in fact, that's what the user wants.

Additionally, when mine worked before, when closing the detail part, the search part became visible. In this case, you are taken back to the the text which must be clicked to open the search part as when the grid is first opened, Thus another nuisance step.

No, something is not quite right because toggleVisibility is supposed to simply toggle the search part from front to back on the screen, much like clicking the tabs on a TabbedUI component. By checking 'Enable show / hide of Search Part', you are actually telling the search part to close thus it appears to have been toggled when in realty it is closed and that is why you must click the text again to open the search part. Make sense?

I submitted a bug report because I opened Sunrise Properties, created grid and the same thing happened there. I did get it to work one time by unchecking the Hide Grid When no Active Search but it lasted one time and then back to the error message.

This is Alpha's response to my bug report:

This is not a bug. You are using an undocumented JavaScript method and using it incorrectly. It appears you want to hide the search section after search, but toggleVisbility is only applicable if show/hide has been enabled for the control.

It should also not be used with an Ajax event as Ajax events fire on any call back, not just after a search is submitted.

It's good to know it's not a bug and would sure be a nice feature to have.
