Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    satting field values based on value of another

    Hi Forum

    I want to set the value of 3 fields based on the value of another i.e

    If Field1.value =bad
    Field2.value = 9
    Field2.value = 10
    Field2.value = 11

    If Field1.value = good
    Field2.value = 12
    Field2.value = 13
    Field2.value = 14

    Can this be done in the cliet side grid object or does it need xbasic

    Thanks for the help

    Robert

    Re: satting field values based on value of another

    are you using a grid or a dialog?

    have you looked at the client side expression?
    eg for Field2.value

    if (Field1.value = "bad",9,12)

    Oh - why do you have Field2 3 times? if Field1 = "Bad" do you want Field2 to be 9, 10 or 11???

        Re: satting field values based on value of another

        I'm a javascript novice, and I'm in a hurry this morning, but I think this might help give you some pieces to work with... (untested... I THINK it's single quotes around 'bad'.. ). I'm assuming you might want to use OnChange event of FIELD1 and inline javascript. And I'm also assuming there are only 2 choices (bad or good)

        Code:
        var f1 = grid.Object.getValue('G','FIELD1',{grid.rowNumber});
        if(f1 == 'bad') {
        	grid.Object.setValue('G','FIELD2',{grid.rowNumber},9);
                     grid.Object.setValue('G','FIELD3',{grid.rowNumber},10);
                     grid.Object.setValue('G','FIELD4',{grid.rowNumber},11);
        } else {
        	grid.Object.setValue('G','FIELD2',{grid.rowNumber},12);
                     grid.Object.setValue('G','FIELD3',{grid.rowNumber},13);
                     grid.Object.setValue('G','FIELD4',{grid.rowNumber},14);

        }

          Thanks Carol

          On the "And I'm also assuming there are only 2 choices (bad or good)" I take it if there are more than 2 choices this would require usome kind of elseif statement, either way you have given me the pointers i need to get working on it.

          Thanks again

            Re: satting field values based on value of another

            Robert, you're right about the else if if more than 2 choices. Although, I'm so clunky at javascript, I might just make several separate if statements without the else stuff. Probably bad advice from a novice, though.

              Re: satting field values based on value of another

              For multiple cases it would be more elegant to use switch like in

              Code:
              switch(n)
              {
              case 1:
                execute code block 1
                break;
              case 2:
                execute code block 2
                break;
              default:
                code to be executed if n is different from case 1 and 2
              }

                Re: satting field values based on value of another

                If you have a lot of choices to get through, have a look at the Javascript Switch statement, http://www.w3schools.com/js/js_switch.asp

                Edit: Hit 'post' too late... Jaime hit it.
