Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    V11 App Server Preparations

Hello, I have 5 web sites built with v10.5 and have completed all testing with a few changes in preperation for v11 in my development environment. I installed the v11 app server in my production system (godaddy vps), installed the license and activated it. I started setting up new configuration files and noticed 2 things.... both involve the System Tray

    1) the balloon is displaying "Alpha Five Application Server" instead of the name I entered in the WAS Systray Caption in the WAS advanced setup screen
    2) the balloon is also display the words "unlicensed" which concerns me. The license is installed and activated and on the WAS sessions setup screen I have the green dot, so I'm thinking everything is set up correctly..... but

If someone can confirm this is how it's presently working, or something else I'd really appreciate it. I'm planning for less than 5 minutes of downtime to upgrade from v10.5 to v11 and want to make sure all the ducks are lined up

    Thanks much, Dave

    Re: V11 App Server Preparations

    David,

As usual, more questions than answers...

Are you using a single instance or multiple instances of the web server? If you see the green dot then you are not using AlwasysUp?

From your description, it sounds like the app server is not using the same config file you modified.

Are you running V10 app srver and V11 app server on the same server at the same time? If so, are you using IP Binding or a different port?

      Re: V11 App Server Preparations

      Hi Pat

I'm running multiple instances - five are v10.5 and one v11

Each instance uses a specific port (no IP binding)

I haven't started renaming any config files yet and am using the default config that comes from the v11 installation

I am not using AlwaysUp (not yet anyway)

        Re: V11 App Server Preparations

The systray caption is created when you start up the executable. If you start it, then open the settings and change the caption or license state, those changes may not be reflected in the caption until you restart the executable. Have you restarted yet?

Thanks Lenny - that was the reason. All is well and V11 is looking fantastic !

            Re: V11 App Server Preparations

I just read your recent post and had a few (probably stupid) questions! Every time I've had an application, I've placed it on a separate VPS server and run a separate copy of A5. Are you running multiple applications and instances on the same VPS? Also, the "original" way I have used A5 was from my own desktop then uploading the data to the VPS. But, I'm thinking it might be better to have it all on the VPS so I can get to it from any machine. Can you give me any feedback on this?

            Thanks.

              Re: V11 App Server Preparations

I am currently running 6 web sites on one VPS and can go up to 30 instances. Many of the Alpha developers are doing similar setups - it's more cost effective and so far I have not seen any performance issues
Speaking for myself.... the authoratative code is on my development/local machine. When anything is ready for production I publish to the production VPS and also have a full copy of Alpha there too. Reason I do this is so I can perform an emergency fix if needed even if I'm traveling. Hope that helps... Dave

                Re: V11 App Server Preparations

So, to clarify, you have two copies of A5, one local and one on the VPS? I've had so many problems mixing the two that I guess I'm just gun shy a bit. I wish there was a paper or full instructions out there to help.
