Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Dialog - how to connect to the 3rd table (ie, grandkids)

Ok - I've made a lot of progress today learning dialogs, but I'm feeling stumped now that I need to add a table for the 'grandkids' of the top level table

    I have:
    table1
    table1 connects to table2
    table1 connects to table3
    table1 connects to table4 and table4 connects to table5

So, what do I do? I want to be able to enter/edit data in Table5 while working with the dialog...

I think I add a button to the primary dialog to open another dialog but I'm not sure which action to use, or how to proceed.

I thought it was Video D24 Using a Dialog Component to Edit a Record in a Grid Component, or Enter a new Record into a Grid Component

or D28 - Using a Dialog Component as an Alternate Editing View of a Record in a Grid

but neither of those seem right...

    suggestions?

    Hi Marion
I have a similar dialog, didn't notice any problem adding the "grand kid" table.
Be careful just to *select* the parent table while clicking on the add table button, then alpha five pops-up the relation dialog.
Of course all this is done in the Data Binding option, clicking on "Bind the controls in the dialog to the fields...", then clicking on Specify Tables
Select your table4 in the list, then click Add Table to add table5 as a child of table4

Re: Dialog - how to connect to the 3rd table (ie, grandkids)

Jaime - are your grandkids in a repeating panel? attached to their parent in a one-to-many relationship?

To clarify - the Table2 middle parent records are in a repeating panel (with a one-to-many relationship to Table1), and they have a one to many relationship with their kids who live in Table3

So I was trying to put a repeating panel nested inside another repeating panel and I get a Red Layout Error - that repeatingsections cannot have other repeating sections living inside

When I try to add the grandkids to their parents (ie, the middle generation), in the Data Binding Options - A5 told me that all tables in repeating panels must be connected to the top level....

The grid component provides exactly what you want

@ Pat - yes, but my data entry component is now built as a Dialog, and I'm liking that UI quite a bit....

In the middle of the night I realized that I really need 2 separate dialogs anyway for the data entry.

I think there are videos about having a grid, and opening a dialog component from the grid - and I think that's the route to explore

thanks for the image - it's very helpful for inspiration on how other folks set things up

            Marion,

What did you end up doing with this? I have a parent table with child, grandchild and great grandchild, each one linked 1 to Many. I changed things a bit so that the address table (Customers may have more than one address) is the parent and the customer table is linked 1:1. However, that still leaves a child and grandchild linked 1:Many to each other thereby violating the structure of only having one table linked 1:Many to the parent. Did you find a way around this?

            Thanks much,

            kenn
