Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Posting Field Rule

Is there something like a posting field rule for Web Apps? Upon saving an order detail, the quantity is automatically subtracted to the stock on hand field of the items table

    Re: Posting Field Rule

I think you will find that field rule is honoured if you set the field to do so.

      Re: Posting Field Rule

Yap, thanks Keith, very helpful information, and when i set to auto increment it will increment, and convert to upercase it will be on all uppercase, save a data to a field it will also save, and if I delete it will be deleted, same thing if i edit then it will be edited. I thought maybe there is a point and click on the Grid which is similar to the one in native DBF's that i misssed, I asked because there is no such thing in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express Edition.

        Jetson,

You can only set to Honour Field Rules for DBF tables.

            Re: Posting Field Rule

            @Jetson -
ok - now I see you're using SQL Server.

I like to handle this type of stuff via SQL, not via A5.

Here are some of the reasons:
            - I'm currently the prime (only) user for my db. Let's say I decide to enter a record via my SQL Query, rather than using my A5 UI. One that needs other things to happen to other tables. If I enter the record via SQL where I've built in a Trigger, or if I use a SQL Stored Procedure, then the actions to the other tables will happen. If I've only built the functionality via A5, then I'm out of luck when I do anything directly from SQL -I'll have to manually do the inserts/updates to the other table.

            - Let's say, down the road, I decide not to use A5. If my functionality is tied to A5 (ie, built from using A5's proprietary methods) then I'll have to re-create the functionality in the new app. Whereas, if I have the functionality built into the base SQL db, then it will travel with me regardless of what app I'm using for the UI.

same thing is true for stuff that goes into reports.... I try to maintain as much functionality in SQL, and just use the reporting engine, or the ui builder to 'present' the info

obviously - this is my opinion, ymmv

Something to look at if you want to do it from A5 - look at the videos for the Code.ServerSide.onAfterSQLcommandExecute .... depending on your programming background and available time, this may suit you.

              Re: Posting Field Rule

Thank you Marion again for valuable information that you are sharing, I guess the functionality that I'm looking for in Alpha Five is slowly fading, in my opinion on the web part. The time saver that i'm looking for was just that automatic posting, It is really one of the powerful features of Alpha five on the desktop using native dbf's.

                Re: Posting Field Rule

perhaps you should write directly to them, and ask how to do it via the web?

Or, ask at the forum on Friday; I'm pretty sure some of the participants are knowledgeable about both the desktop and web, and will be able to tell you how to find the functionality you are looking for.

I doubt that the web version has less functionality than the desktop version

                  Jetson:
Have you thought of using a trigger (After Insert/Update/Delete) to add/subtract invoice qty to/from a qty in another/Inventory table?

                      Re: Posting Field Rule

                      Hi Jetson

Triggers have NOTHING to do with A5; I highly doubt that you will find anything about triggers in the A5 wiki

The trigger is built within SQL-SERVER and is attached to a table.

They happen automatically when an INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE (and I think there's one other) is done to the table, depending on how you've written it.

I want SQL to do what SQL does, and I want A5 to present the info

Here's the link about the (free) Friday webinars; they are held by Steve Wood, not by A5.

Oh I see, I thought triggers can be called in alpha five to execute, I thought its the same thing with Triggers, Thanks much for the Info.
