Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dynamic Connection String

I have a customer who built a very extensive single-client site. Now he wants to make it into a multi-tenant site. A dynamic connection string would be ideal here, but the work to replace all the instances of the existing connection string with a dynamic one is daunting.

So I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts on this approach: Can I do anything dynamically with the existing named connection string to "alter" it as it's called depending on the database I want?

For instance, existing conn name is CONN.

If Fred logs in, I'd like Fred to be using the the database named MySQL_Fred.

If Steve logs in, he would use data from MySQL_Steve.

But, I'm pretty stuck using the existing "single use" string CONN that currently points to just one database.

Can I manage that on the fly somehow for multiple tenants?

    Re: Dynamic Connection String

    I use it like this:
    session.__protected__AgencyConnection = "{A5API='SQLServer',A5DBVersion=2008,Server='sqlserver',A5ANSINullPadWarn=Default,UserName= " + "Tenant" + vCompanyID + "," + "Password= " + vPw + ", " + "Database='AgData'}"

I grab what Tenant they are when they sign in. I then have all the master tables that have a tenant ID set up as a view. So I handle the filter on the view level.

Security for the Tenant is on the SQL side.
Security for the User is on the Alpha Security side.
Hope that gives you some ideas...

      Re: Dynamic Connection String

Thanks Lee. I'm not sure how to use what you suggest with this situation. This app (that I just inherited) was built with very little thought to multi-tenancy. So a single named connection string is embedded everywhere; in the grid datasource, all sorts of Xbasic instruction, etc.

What I really need to do is "change" the definition of the named string for the logged-in user on the fly. I'm not sure that this can be done or is advisable but it's really worth my asking.

        Re: Dynamic Connection String

I've seen it done with another product. They didn't want to change all of the VB code. They changed it on the SQL side with the login and views.

          Re: Dynamic Connection String

Well in this case, the tables (and views) have no accommodation for multi-tenancy, and my customer feels more comfortable just having multiple MySQL databases. So the job here is to "change" the connection string to point to a different database.

            Steve,

Microsoft has federations in Azure & it may be in SQL2012 as well; haven't played with 2012 yet. Federations is what you need I think so you won't have to change your code. It's been some time I've been looking into it so you better google around for Federations.

This is one of those prime examples of a global replace function. Go find a string and change it to a new one.

I know how to do that in the Code tab Chad, but what about all the Server side events, Xbasic functions, and selected connection strings in the web components? Have you found a Find/Replace function I haven't?

No sorry Steve I wish I had but that is exactly what I am hoping for as a new feature. Imagine taking an entire project like you have and doing a find replace everywhere within that project. It would be a Massive time saver... Sorry its not out there for you yet.

Many moons ago Selwyn expressed a desire to allow us to make the grids editable for such purposes as this, but I'm betting it's still on their "to do" list and probably not near the top besides. What you're suggesting would have made an excellent Plan A, but I have a Plan B which I'll put into motion tonight.

                      Hi Steve,

Did you ever workout a solution to this? It seems like you should be able to do this
