Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Concatenate 3 fields to one field

    I have found some concatenate posts on the message board but each one i try does not work, so i know the issue is on my side.
    I have a Name_Last, Name_First and Name_MI field and i would like to concatenate these into a bound field called Name_Full. I have tried a few different ones, and put it in different places, such as the AfterDialogValidate (just before the save script), but nothing works.
    Also, does anyone think would it be better to just have MySQL perform this with a trigger, concatenate the 3 fields into the Name_Full field. If so, what is the best way to do that.
    Thanks for any help.

    Re: Concatenate 3 fields to one field

    I hide the full name field and put this in the calculated expression. Upper(NameFirst) + Upper(NameMiddle) + Upper(NameLast) + Upper(NameNick)

    You can add spaces. For what I'm doing I don't want the spaces. I use this as an internal column. In other tables I use a view to build the full name.

      That works, thank you very much. I overlooked the calculated expression option.

        This works great with a new record, but if a record is edited, the changes are not made in the Name_Full field. How can i make it handle updates?

          You would need to put the calculation in the can update record area then as well.

            Here's an example of the CanUpdateRecord:

            function CanUpdateRecord as v (DataSubmitted as P, Args as p, PageVariables as p, Result as p )
            with PageVariables
            Result.Cancel = .f.
            Result.ErrorHTML = ""

            datasubmitted.UserIdMod = session.UserID
            datasubmitted.DateMod = Now()

            end with
            end function

              Where is the CanUpdateRecord in the dialog? I looked inserver and client side.

                  I should have included that. Sorry Chad. Is it not saving updates because the field is not identified as being dirty? I am just stabbing in the dark here, trying to figure out a solution.

                    Re: Concatenate 3 fields to one field

                    The trigger approach only works when you add or change the table (depending on which trigger you choose) and you can only have one trigger per type per table, so is this important enough to use up your triggers?

                    You might try building the concatinated name in your select statement or base the dialog on a view that includes the concatinated field. I haven't tried it but it seems like it should work.

                        Thanks Gregg, that makes sense, and thanks Pat, good point about the trigger. Not going to waste a trigger on this.
