Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    get file path

I'm trying to get an image's file into a text field for upload into a table.

The closest thing to this is "File Upload." In theory, it allows you to do just that.

However, It wants you to save the record first. What's the use of this action event? Is there alternative way to accomplish this?

Could you re-word your question? I think I get what you want to do - upload an image - but I cannot tell what you have tried and what is not working.

I need to create a button that creates a pop-up window. In this pop-up window, one can browse and choose this file. I want to save the file path into a row.

There's is a "file upload" component, but it only works for existing records.

"File Upload" requires the record be saved first but "File Upload - User Defined" does not require the record be saved first.

I gathered the gist of that after watching some a5 videos.
However, I need to save the file path.

"File Upload" has terrific options for doing this, but they appear to be lacking in the "User Defined" iteration.

            Re: get file path

You can use either File Upload or the User Defined version to get and save the file path. File Upload is easier to use, but I take it you need to upload to a new "blank" record row, and then save the record later on if at all.

To start off I assume you want the file path on your server, not the computer that you are uploading the file from. If you want the second option, the file path on the computer that is being uploaded from, you cannot use EITHER of these methods because it has no ability to determine that path. But if you want the path on the server you are uploading TO, then the file path is whatever you declare it to be. So when you use File Upload - User Defined, you just declare the file path, and use xbasic or sql syntax to store that information, along with the file name, in your table.

Before I give examples, the File Upload mandates that the row exist. The File Upload - User Defined "expects" the row to exist, but the upload still takes place and you can manipulate and deal with the uploaded file however you want.

This will "get" the file path on the server (after declaring it), and then create that path:
            dim fldr as c = filename_decode("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\mypath" + chr(92))
            dir_create_recurse(fldr)
' the chr(92) just puts a "\" at the end of the path.

You could also just define the folder without the 'alias', and create it:
            dim fldr as c = "c:\myfolder1\myfolder2" + chr(92))
            dir_create_recurse(fldr)

This argument holds the file name from the upload: e.fileArray[1].fileName
This is the actual file, as a binary object: e.fileArray[1].data

This saves the file in your selected directory (fldr):
            dim filename as c = e.fileArray[1].filename
            dim data as b = e.fileArray[1].data
            file.from_blob(fldr + filename,data)

This holds the primary key of the record with the Upload button:
            e.primaryKeyArray[1]

e.primaryKeyArray[1] will either be the table record number for DBF or the table Primary Key for SQL.

This is important -> if you are uploading from a new blank record (technically row number -1) then e.primaryKeyArray[1] is BLANK since there is no record number (DBF) or table Primary Key (SQL). Everything else still works, but it doesn't know what record the upload is "attached to" since the row was blank.

Hi Steve, can the folder be a variable from the grid?
