Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

v11 has HTML reporting capability called "Layout" reports (http://alphafivewiki.com/Layout+Tabl...+in+Version+11), but they're buggy as hell. I had high hopes for them but I gave up. You can, however, handcode your own HTML reports. You will still need to print them from the browsers page print command.

Re: How to print report directly to printer?

      hello

according to wiki - web publishing - printing reports.
"This example shows how to print a report and deliver it to your Internet user. Since, a paper report is out the question, Alpha Five will compose the Invoice report from the invoice.set, save it in PDF format as foo.pdf, and then start Adobe Acrobat to display it in the client's browser."

the report is designed to be delivered as a pdf and then people should select the print option to print it on their paper. this is what usually happens if i have to print reports from other sites. besides this will save ton of paper.
      thanks for reading

Re: How to print report directly to printer?

It is quite complicated to do this. Steve workings has a "Xbasic For Web Applications" course which can be purchased from Alpha for I believe around $69. In it is a 9 part tutorial on HTML Reports. You can do some pretty cool stuff with this tutorial. The report dumps to a web page as HTML. You can put a print button there which brings up the print dialog so you can print it.

Guys if I read this thread correctly your customer wants a "REPORT" to go directly to a printer. No problem I have an app that prints 1000's of labels per day, like clock work to a network printer. Get a copy of watchdirectory with watchdirectory you can send a report do a directory, Thus setup watchdirectory to print that report to a network printer, then either delete the report or move to a backup directory. Also has other really nice features to use as well.

FYI this has to be a Intranet Web application setup.

The question was how to print a report generated by a web application (off a button, I presume) from a browser directly to the client printer without first generating and displaying it as a pdf file which is the alpha default.

One can print a report to a web page as HTML, but somewhere along the line the end user has to invoke the browser print dialog.

Hi, sorry to ressurect an old thread, but i've been working to make a receipt from an a5 report to a POS printer.
Unfortunately PDF print result is a little bit quirky to read with my POS printer, but it prints fine when I print out a DOC or HTML...
Is it possible to print out HTML using your software I've not seen the option been contacting you through website email but hasn't got any response..

If there's anyone who can chime in I'd appreciate the feedback thanks.

You can use printHTML() as a calculated field in your report,

Re: How to print report directly to printer?

Have all upgrade to the latest Adobe Reader, Open the report, and then look for the PRINT icon on top right. You print directly from Reader.
Also the flag looking icon pulls down to see more options like download, etc.

                  Hope that helped.

As an alternate theory, HP offers a print by email option that would work great for something like this.
