Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Duplicating a record in detail View

    Code:
    var EMPNUM = {grid.object}._getValue('D','EMPLOYEE_NUM',);
    {grid.Object}.detailViewNewRecord(EMPNUM);
    {grid.object}._setValue('D','EMPLOYEE_NUM',EMPNUM);
    I am trying to duplicate a record from one detail view, into new record in detail view, trying to get one field working first but can't seem to do it? Anyone have any ideas?

        Re: Duplicating a record in detail View

        Not sure how you want to get this done... how you are working with the detail view. Normally, you'd have a Grid... multiple rows displayed, you highlight a row and your single record detail section displays the current row's detailed information. Is this the detail you want to create a new detail record from? Need a bit more info... maybe attach an image of what you're trying to do. From your code, and from what I've read, {grid.Object}.detailViewNewRecord(EMPNUM); may be wrong. The documentation says {grid.Object}.detailViewNewRecord(); in order to put the detail view into add record mode.

          Could you explain a bit more how these two detail views are connected? Is it a grid/detail setup? Explain and someone in the forum will have a brilliant idea for you to try, I'm sure...

            Re: Duplicating a record in detail View

            It is just a basic grid with a detail view, I just want to take the information from a certain record, store it into a variable, open up a new records detail view and put that information into that new record. They have videos to duplicate from an updatable grid but not from an updatable detail view.

            Here is the code I am using right now
            var val = {grid.object}.getValue('D','EMPLOYEE_NUM');
            {grid.Object}.detailViewNewRecord();
            {grid.object}.setValue('D','EMPLOYEE_NUM',EMPNUM);

              Re: Duplicating a record in detail View

              It's a bit of a timing issue... it's all happening too fast. To test that theory put this at the end of your code...

              Code:
              alert(val);
              You'll see that the alert statement happens before the new record is set up.

              So... try delaying iT a bit. (and you're code needs a bit of fixing... probably just a typo, but you're using EMPNUM where you need val on the setValue.

              Code:
              var val = {grid.object}.getValue('D','EMPNUM');
              {grid.Object}.detailViewNewRecord();
              setTimeout(function() {
              {grid.object}.setValue('D','EMPNUM',val);
              },200);

                Still can't seem to get it to work.

                  Where are you running the code from. I've got this in the onClick event of a button in the detail section. Try increasing the setTimeout value from 200 to 300 or 400... see if that helps. And, just in case, stick an alert(val); in as the last statement... just to make sure you're getting the value.

                    Re: Duplicating a record in detail View

                    Here's a much better way of getting this done. I don't like using setTimeout because, at times, it's unreliable depending on fast your server is, etc... it's too variable.

                    In your button or hyperlink for your new record put this...

                    Code:
                    window['__custAddr'] = {grid.object}.getValue('D','CUSTDETAILADDR');
                    {grid.Object}.detailViewNewRecord();
                    You're setting up a window var called __custAddr and assigning the value of your field to it, then starting a new record.

                    Then, in the Grid's Client-side event, afterDetailViewNewRecord, put this...

                    Code:
                    if (window['__custAddr'] != 'undefined')
                    {
                    {grid.object}.setValue('D','CUSTDETAILADDR',window['__custAddr']);
                    }
                    Check for the existing of the variable... and if it's not there don't do anything. If it is, then set your value.

                      Yup that way works, thank you for the help

                      Only thing is that when I hit the blank new record button it seems to doing the duplicate action, is there in way to stop that?

                      It is caused because I have the date defaulted to today on a new record, I will not duplicate the date until I figure that out, thanks for the help.

                        Yes, the javascript variable works well indeed, but remember that you have many options here especially because you are staying within the same grid. You can therefore set a grid "rtc" variable or a "stateinfo" variable and this is fully accessible from the detail.

                        As an example similar to your case, see:

                          Re: Duplicating a record in detail View

                          A little change
                          Code:
                          if (window['__empnum'] != 'undefined')
                          {
                          {grid.object}.setValue('D','EMPLOYEE_NUM',window['__empnum']);
                          [B]window['__empnum']='undefined';[/B]
                          }
                          if (window['__qty'] != 'undefined')
                          {
                          {grid.object}.setValue('D','QTY',window['__qty']);
                          [B]window['__qty']='undefined';[/B]
                          }
                          if (window['__date'] != 'undefined')
                          {
                          {grid.object}.setValue('D','DATE',window['__date']);
                          [B]window['__date']='undefined';[/B]
                          }
                          This allows a blank new record to still be used along with the duplicate button, still trying to figure out the best way for a default value.

                            You can set your initial value for each field as a field property.
