Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How can I duplicate all the fields in a dialog ?

    When I open a dialog and fill in all the fields I would like a button that saves all the data and then duplicates every field for the next record. Any idea's?

    Thanks for your time.

    Hi Reed,

    I'm curios, "duplicates every field for the next record", why would you want to do that? The only time I wanted to duplicate data was because the Delivery address was the same as the Invoice address and that was in the same record.

      "Why would I want to do that" - are you serious?????

      I do this all the time, and it is very common to have a "copy" button along side the "new" button in every app I have ever written. The question was not *should* I do this, the question was *how*. Most xBase languages had the "Set Carry On" to allow this even at the command level. The better way for my taste is to use Scatter() and Gather(). I don't see them in Alpha, and it is beyond my skills to write them, but we sure could use them.

      If you feel you must question another professional's reason for doing something you should advise *how* to do it first, not just post an answer questioning their reasons.

      If you don't have an answer to the original question why are you even commenting?

        This video should get you what you need http://www.ajaxvideotutorials.com/V1...licateRows.swf

        You'll need to add some code to save the row first... can't remember if it in the video. There are methods available for "submit" and "validate"... whatever you need.

        And... easy on the comments... Keith was just asking for more information.

            Re: How can I duplicate all the fields in a dialog ?

            Bill,

            Thanks for your input. Seems like you only wanted to tell me how I should be answering someone else's thread without giving much of an answer yourself. Just because you do that "all the time", does not mean every one knows or should also be doing the same as you.

            As there are many ways to do things in Alpha, sometimes it is better to get an understanding of WHY someone wants to do something and what result they hope to get. This not only helps me and others to try help better, but also other people following up on this thread at a later time.

            Sometimes a thread can be unanswered for a period of time, just a quick reply regardless of its nature pushes it back to the top.

            I must admit that I dont always know the direct answer but by being involved with the thread gives me an opportunity to also learn something new.

            So, I dont find your comment at all helpful, to me, or to the original question.

            Thanks for the back up David.

              Re: How can I duplicate all the fields in a dialog ?

              I do something similar all the time. when doing a quotation based on a customer created bill of quantities an item can be repeated in different sections of the bill, say per phase of the job. I first fill in all the data in a dialog required fr the price build up then using action javascript I first empty a dummy table, then copy all the data into it, then in the new items dialog simply paste from the dummy table.

              Here is the code I have put in each of the copy and paste buttons on my dialog.

              Copy part
              Code:
              dim ti as sql::TableInfo
              dim cn as sql::Connection
              dim args as sql::Arguments
              dim sqlnewtable as c
              flag=cn.Open("::name::latest")
              if cn.GetTableInfo(ti,"bup")=.t. then
              	sqlstatement = "Delete from bup"
              	cn.Execute(sqlstatement)
              end if

              sqlnewtable= "Insert into bup (TYPE, DESCRIPTION, CONSTANT, A_WASTE, UNITS, COST, NOTE, EXT, Q_iten_no) select TYPE, DESCRIPTION, CONSTANT, A_WASTE, UNITS, COST, NOTE, EXT, Q_iten_no from buildup where QSUM_NO = :qsumno "
              args.Add("qsumno",convert_type(e.dataSubmitted.QSUM_NO,"n"))
              flag = cn.Execute(sqlnewtable,args)
              cn.Close()
              Paste part
              Code:
              dim cn as sql::Connection
              dim args as sql::Arguments
              dim sqlnewtable as c
              flag=cn.Open("::name::latest")

              sqlnewtable= "Insert into buildup (TYPE, DESCRIPTION, OUTPUT, CONSTANT, A_WASTE, TOTAL_QTY, UNITS, COST, NOTE, EXT, QSUM_NO, Q_iten_no) select TYPE, DESCRIPTION, :oput, CONSTANT, A_WASTE, (CONSTANT * :oput *(1+(A_WASTE /100))), UNITS, COST, NOTE, EXT,:qsumno, Q_iten_no from bup "
              args.Add("qsumno",convert_type(e.dataSubmitted.QSUM_NO,"n"))
              args.Add("oput",convert_type(e.dataSubmitted.quantity,"n"))
              flag = cn.Execute(sqlnewtable,args)
              cn.Close()
